Malayalees celebrate Onam

Thiruvananthapuram, August 29: Keralites today celebrated the harvest festival of Onam with traditional gaiety and enthusiasm, commemorating a mythical past of peace, prosperity and equality.

In houses, floral carpets were laid to welcome mythical demon King Mahabali, who is believed to visit his subjects on 'Thiruvonam' day of the Malayalam month of Chingam (first month of the Malayalam calendar).

According to legend, King Mahabali once ruled a land of plenty, where his subjects were happy. But the Gods grew jealous of him and got him banished to the netherworld by Lord Vishnu in his reincarnation as 'Vamana' (dwarf).' The Lord, however, gave the King permission to visit his subjects once a year on Thiruvonam day.

People wearing new clothes thronged temples in the morning. The important part of the celebration is a grand feast on plantain leaves at noon in all homes.

The week-long Onam celebrations, being organised by the state tourism department began yesterday. A series of cultural programmes are slated to be held during the week, culminating with a procession on September 3.

Mangaluru, Jun 3: A banner that read "Veer Savarkar Flyover Pumpwell" surfaced on the sidewall of the Pumpwell flyover in Mangaluru on Tuesday night.

It is suspected that activists of Bajrang Dal put up the controversial banner. Though it was removed later, it sparked debates on social media and photos of it went viral.

The development comes amid the controversy over the naming of a flyover at Yelahanka in Bengaluru after Savarkar.

A Hindutva ideologue, Savarkar has tendered apology to British imperialists and pledged to support them following his arrest during India’s freedom movement.

Mandya, Aug 1: In a terrific incident, a college student has stabbed his own mother to death in Karnataka’s Mandya town over a trivial issue. The police have managed to nab the accused. 

According to police, the boy was irked by his mother rebuking him for staying out with his friends late in the night.

On Wednesday (July 29), she scolded him for not listening to her advice, following which he stabbed her to death, the official said. 

The student was arrested on July 30. He reportedly confessed to the crime. 

A police officer said that the woman was upset over her son frequently spending time with his friends till late in the night.

Bengaluru, Feb 19: Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa thanked his Kerala counterpart Pinarayi Vijayan for initiating action against those dumping bio-medical and bio-wastes in Karnataka's districts from neighboring state Kerala.

In a statement, he said, "First I would like to thank Kerala Chief Minister Pinnarayi Vijayan for his prompt reaction and response to initiate legal action against the dumpers of bio-medical and bio-waste in our districts neighboring Kerala."

The Karnataka Chief Minister has taken a serious note of the reports in a section of media on alleged dumping of bio-medical waste and bio-waste by people from Kerala in bordering Mysuru, Kodagu and Chamarajnagar districts.

"I have directed deputy commissioners of concerned districts, environment department, and pollution control board to take stock of the situation and check surreptitious activities of individuals and agencies from Kerala who are indulging in this illegal activity. I have also directed the officials to prevent the use of this bio-medical waste by Jaggery units as fuel," Yediyurappa said.

He assured that soon this activity will be checked and ended.
