Udupi: Congress leader Manjunath Udyavar dies at 56

congUdupi, August 29: Senior Congressman Manjunath Udyavar expired early on Wednesday at KMC Hospital Manipal, here, after a year-long illness. He was 56.

Manjunath, a staunch Congressman, had joined the services of Oscar Fernandes after his election as the Member of the Loksabha in 1980 at the latter's Delhi office.

He was Personal Secretary to Rajyasabha Member Oscar Fernandes.

Later, he looked after the affairs of MP's Office Udupi Office. He had also served as the Udupi District Congress Committee General Secretary.

He was the honorary president of Udyavara Friends' Circle, Executive President of Udyavara Hindu Public Crematorium Committee, Director of Director of Udyavara Sports Club.

AICC General Secretary Oscar Fernandes, District Congress President Gopal Poojary and others expressed heartfelt condolences.

His corpse will be kept at Udyavara ground at 10.30 am on Thursday to enable the public to pay their last respects, followed by cremation at 11.30 am at Mukthi Dhama crematorium. Oscar Fernandes left for Udupi to participate in the funeral programme on Thursday.

Son of late Rama Shettigar and late Appi Shettigar, Manjunath is survived by wife Radha and daughter Sarvamangala.

Mangaluru, Jan 1: On the first day of 2020, Bajpe Police became somewhat of a Guardian Angel for a college student, who was wandering around the city in the wee hours of Wednesday, convincing and escorting him to his home safely, after coming to know about his residence.

According to Bajpe Police Probationary Sub-Inspector Anita Nikkam and Police Officer Devappa Hosamani, they noticed a youth, hailing from Handelu in Todaru and studying in a college at Moodbidri, wandering at around 0245 hrs.

When asked about his whereabouts, the boy did not respond initially. However, police managed to collect his address and his mother's phone number after half an hour of interrogation.

Bengaluru, Mar 13: In the wake of coronavirus outbreak, Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa has summoned an emergency meeting with ministers and senior officials on Friday to discuss the situation.

The schools, malls and other public places have been shut to control the spread of the deadly virus.

Schools in the state have announced early summer vacation for their students this academic year as a precautionary measure amid Covid-19 scare.

Chikkamagaluru, May 9: A young Hindu activist allegedly killed his brother at Beeranahalli in Tarikere taluk of Chikkamagaluru district in Karnataka over a board game dispute.

The accused has been identified as 26-year-old Kiran and the victim is his 29-year-old brother Arun, said police.

According to police, the duo were playing a board game on Thursday and they had placed a bet of Rs 500. 

After Arun won the game, he asked for the money and Kiran refused to yield, which lead to an argument. 

In a fit of rage, an intoxicated Kiran hit his brother and when the latter fell unconscious and dragged him on to the road.

Arun was immediately rushed to McGann Hospital in Shivamogga. However, he died on Thursday night, said police.

A case was registered at the Lakkavalli Police Station.
