Journalist among 11 arrested for suspected terror links

Bangalore, August 30: Eleven people have been arrested in cities of Bangalore and Hubli for allegedly having links with banned terrorist outfit Indian Mujahideen, highly placed sources said.

A journalist working with Deccan Herald English daily newspaper in Bangalore is also among the arrested.

The journalist, identified as Muthi-ur-Rahman Siddiqui, was reportedly picked up by the Uttar Pradesh police and handed over to the Bangalore Police.


Siddiqui, who hails from Hubli was staying at an apartment at JC Nagar in the city.

Sources said that five people were arrested in Hubli while six others including the journalist were arrested in Bangalore.

It is learnt that most of the arrested were students. Laptops, mobile phones and few Islamic books have been recovered from the arrested.

One of the friends of Siddiqui on condition of anonymity told 'Coastaldigest.com' that the latter never involved himself in any illegal activities.

“As per my knowledge he never involved himself in any anti-constitutional or illegal activities. He has nothing to do with Indian Mujahideen”, he said.


Police sources said that the youths were picked up for questioning in connection with the 2010 Chinnaswamy Stadium blast case. Fifteen people were injured when two bombs exploded at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 18, 2010 on the eve of the Bangalore-Mumbai IPL semifinal match.


The inquiry of those arrested is in progress and police have stated that the interrogation is still in the preliminary stage and no tangible information has been ascertained yet. The police are probing each person's links with the terrorist outfit, they said.


It is learnt that the five arrests came after a tip off from the Uttar Pradesh police team which was in Bangalore on Wednesday.

The police for now are still investigating the role each of them played in the blast.

Speaking to reporters in Bangalore, Director General of Police Lalrokhuma Pachau said that the background of each of those picked up was being checked.

"Their background is being checked. After we come to some stage, we will tell you", he said, adding that the investigation was on.

Sources also add that there could be more arrests in the Chinnaswamy stadium blast case, possibly from Bengal, again based on a tip off from the UP police.

Bengaluru, Jul 27: The Karnataka government on Sunday directed the Director General of Police Praveen Sood to submit a detailed report on the internal security following the United Nations' observation that international terror outfit IS was active in the state.

The UN report stated that Al-Qaeda in the Indian subcontinent, which reportedly has between 150 and 200 members from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar, was reportedly planning attacks in the region.

It also warned that there were 'significant numbers' of ISIS operatives in Karnataka and Kerala. Reacting to the UN report, Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said the state government has taken a serious note of the report on the activities of IS in the state.

The state government is in touch with the Centre and the neighbouring states to keep a close watch on the activities of suspicious people and their supporters.

"In this context, it has been decided to strengthen the internal security of the state. The Director General of Police has been asked to submit a detailed report," Bommai said in a release.

The state is also keeping a strict vigil on all those entering Bengaluru from other states, the Minister said. He recalled that the state police had arrested several members of Al-Hind organisation in January last and Jamaat- ul-Mujahideen from Bangladesh in 2018 and 2019. He added that the National Investigation Agency is investigating the case of JMB.

Mangaluru, May 9: An Indian expatriate worker from Karnataka’s coastal district of Dakshina Kannada died of in Dubai after he suffered a cardiac arrest.

The deceased has been identified as Yashwant, 37, hailing from Malali Kajila House in Tenkulipady village, on the outskirts of Mangaluru.

He was working as an air-conditioner mechanic in Dubai for the last two years.

As per sources, he suffered a heart attack. However, the exact cause of this death is yet to be known.

Dubai, Apr 11: An Indian expat in the UAE is facing police action for allegedly insulting Islam on social media in response to a Facebook post on the coronavirus, according to a media report.

Rakesh B Kitturmath, who worked as a team leader at Emrill Services, an integrated facilities management (FM) headquartered in Dubai, was sacked on Thursday after his post sparked outrage on social media, the Gulf News reported.

“Kitturmath’s employment stands terminated with immediate effect. He will be handed over to Dubai Police. We have a zero-tolerance policy towards such hate crimes,” said Stuart Harrison, CEO of Emrill Services.

"As an organisation, we have worked hard over the years to embrace diversity and create a culture of inclusion, where every nationality, religion and background is welcomed and celebrated. We have a strict social media policy for our employees to ensure they respect our values, both inside and outside of work," the newspaper quoted Harrison as saying.

Harrison said they are trying to find out if Kitturmath was still in the UAE, according to the report.

“We have over 8,500 employees so this may take a while. That said, we have fired him. If he’s still in the country, he will be handed over to Dubai Police,” he said.

Originally from Ranebennuri, Karnataka, Kitturmath joins an ever-growing list of Indian ex-pats who have landed in trouble for alleged Islamophobic messages in recent days.

Earlier this week, Abu Dhabi resident Mitesh Udeshi was sacked for posting a cartoon mocking Islam on his Facebook page while a police complaint was filed against Sameer Bhandari of Future Vision Events & Weddings’ in Dubai after he asked a Muslim job seeker from India to go back to Pakistan.

The UAE outlaws all religious or racial discrimination under a legislation passed in 2015.

The anti-discrimination/anti-hatred law prohibits all acts “that stoke religious hatred and/or which insult religion through any form of expression, be it speech or the written word, books, pamphlets or via online media.”
