Bangalore, September 2: Abu Raihan Ahmed Noori, one of the pioneers of Islamic literature in Kannada, passed away at a private hospital here on Sunday night.

92-year-old Noori, had been bedridden for many years because of old-age related illness. Family sources said that he had been taken to a hospital a few days ago in a serious condition.

Born and brought up in a prominent Beary family in the coastal city of Mangalore, Noori spent later part of his life in Bangalore.


He is survived by three daughters, two sons and scores of relatives, friends, well-wishers and fans.

He was a prominent Muslim writer and journalist in Dakshina Kananda. He was also part of a six member team of scholars who, for the first time, translated the meaning of the Quran to Kannada language in 1978, working on this project for about seven years.

He has written books in local Beary bashe and Kannada language. His book, Maikala, a documentary about the culture, Beary community of Mangalore in Kannada language, has been cataloged by the largest library in the world, the Library of Congress at Washington, D.C., USA.

He has also translated more than 20 books from various languages into Kannada. He edited several periodicals such as "Sandesha", "Kitaab" and "The Message".

He contributed extensively to 'Sanmarga', a Mangalore based Kannada weekly magazine.

He was also one of the founding members of the Beary's Welfare Association in 1988. In 2010, the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy awarded him an honorary award for the year 2009 for his literary achievements.


He was well-versed in many languages like Urdu, Farsi, Arabic, Hindi, Malayalam, Tulu and Tamil.

Over the past 50 years, he had become a household name in the Beary community due to his popular songs and music composition.

Some of his popular songs are 'Kelanda Makkale kelanda,' 'Ethare Tholo Varakro Masth,' 'Alam padachadum neenem, adre chameychedum neeneme.' In January 2011, a CD of Beary Bashe songs written by him was released in Bangalore.

Kasaragod, Apr 6: Even as the number of positive cases of Novel Coronovirus is on increase in this district, the ten-member medical team from Thiruvananthapuram on Monday will inspect and review modalities to convert the proposed Kasaragod medical college into a COVID-19 hospital.

Given the constraints being faced by the district hospital in Kanhangad near here, the 200-beded Kasaragod medical college hospital in Ukkinada near here would be equipped to cater to the Covid-19 patients on isolation.

The ten member medical experts who reached here late on Sunday, are on a special mission to immediately equip the hospital as to convert it as a Covid-19 centre.

Bengaluru, May 5: After Congress delegation was denied to donate a cheque of Rs one crore to ensure free transportation to migrants, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president DK Shivakumar said that Congress party can go anywhere and help anyone they want and BJP leaders must understand what constitutional rights are.

Earlier on Monday, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister who holds the transport portfolio, Lakshman Savadi suggested the Congress delegation for donating at least Rs 150 crore to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund instead of handing over a cheque of Rs one crore as a donation in order to bear the transportation fare of the migrants.

While reacting to Deputy CM and other BJP leaders' comments, Shivakumar said, "BJP leaders must understand what constitutional rights are. Who are these BJP leaders? They are now entering to help migrant workers after RSS guidelines. They must understand that we are a party and we can go anywhere and help anyone we want."

Congress leaders on Monday met Savadi to handover a cheque of Rs one crore in order to donate money for the migrant workers' transportation.

However, Savadi did not accept the cheque and suggested the Congress delegation to donate a bigger amount to the CM Relief Fund.

While addressing media after meeting the Congress leaders' delegation in the leadership of KPCC president, DK Shivakumar, Savadi said: "Congress has a history and its a wealthy party, still if Congress leaders want to donate, at least they must donate Rs 150 crores to the CM relief fund to fight COVID-19."

DK Shivakumar yesterday slammed the government and urged to depute free transport services to migrant workers, he asserted that Congress will donate money in this regard.

But the Managing Director of KSRTC denied to accept the cheque of Rs one crore and suggested the Congress delegation to meet transport minister or Chief Minister and donate to CM relief funds. Hence, today congress leaders met deputy CM Lakshman Savadi and tried to handover Rs one crore cheque which he did not accept.

After Congress leaders slammed the government and people criticised the decision of collecting bus fares, CM BS Yediyurappa ordered for free transport service to migrant workers.

Bengaluru, Jul 31: The Karnataka government on Wednesday put on hold a controversial proposal to drop certain chapters, including on Islam, Christianity, Tipu Sultan and his father Hyder Ali, from social science textbooks to reduce the 2020-21 syllabi for students in classes 1-10.

Citing the COVID-19 pandemic and the disruption caused to the academic calendar of the year, the government had earlier dropped the chapter on Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali from the Class 7 social science textbook, saying chapters on Tipu Sultan have been retained in the Class 6 and 10 textbooks.

The move did not go down well with the opposition, which saw certain ulterior motives behind the decision.

Apparently under sharp criticism, the Department of Public Instruction issued a new notification on Wednesday "on the directions of the Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar".

There is a delay in opening the schools during the academic year 2020-21 due to COVID-19 pandemic, said the latest order.

In this context, the order said, chapters were dropped to fit in 120 days of the academic year for classes 1 to 10 and the same was published in the department's website.

"However, on the directions of the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, the decision to drop certain chapters has been put on hold. A review will be done following which the deleted chapters will be uploaded in the website," the order read.

Earlier in the day, Mr Kumar had issued a statement, saying that the decision to truncate the syllabus has not been finalised yet. He also made it clear that his department would not remove chapters unnecessarily.

Former chief minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah had attacked the government on the issue.

"The government, which has failed to control the spread of coronavirus, is using it as an opportunity to push its clandestine agenda of saffronising the textbooks," Siddaramaiah tweeted.
