Udupi, September 3: The death of a 24-year old man, who was suspected to have suffered from leptospirosis (rat fever), has trigged panic reactions from the people in the district.
However, doctors have not yet confirmed the cause of death.
Raveendra Achayra, who had been suffering from severe fever since last Monday was admitted to a private hospital in Manipal and died on Friday night as he failed to respond to the treatment, a doctor said.
Their blood samples had been sent for confirmation tests. “The cause of death can only be confirmed after receiving the test results,” he said.
Five new cases
Meanwhile the number of confirmed rat fever cases in Udupi district since January has gone up to 11.
Udupi district health officer Dr Ramachandra Bairy said that five new rat fever cases were found and confirmed in the district on Saturday. All these five patients are treated for fever and are fast recovering, he said.
He said that the other six patients have already recovered following the treatment.
