Install CCTV cameras to keep an eye on Manipal students: IGP

Manipal, September 4: Inspector General of Police (Western Range) Pratap Reddy has urged to take immediate steps to install close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in buildings and complexes at the earliest to keep an eye on students in Manipal.

Speaking at an interaction programme jointly organised by Udupi district Police Department and Manipal University to imbibe discipline among university students, he also said that Home Guard personnel should be deployed for effective night patrolling in the city.

In recent days, there has been an increase in illegal activities in and around Manipal such as use and sale of intoxicated substances, consumption of liquor in public places, dancing in clubs and misdemeanour among university students, along with theft of mobiles, laptops and two-wheelers, and irresponsible driving due to intoxication. In view of the rise in complaints regarding these problems, this urgent meeting was called, he said.

Detailing the severe consequences of all the above issues as well as precautionary measures with the help of a demo, Udupi district Superintendent of Police Dr Boralingaiah said that action was being taken by the district police to resolve those kind of problems. Through swift implementation of police watch during night hours, strict action will be taken against those who sold and consumed intoxicating substances and drove rashly and irresponsibly, he said.

Manipal University Chancellor Ramdas Pai, Vice-Chancellor Dr H S Ballal, Registrar V K Prabhu, heads of various departments in Mangalore and hostel wardens were present on the occasion. Police officials under Udupi city limits as well as Manipal police officials participated in the event.

Bengaluru, Jan 28: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Tuesday warned the officials that strict action will be taken against the officials, who demand bribe from beneficiaries in various schemes.

Speaking after distributing the regularising letters to around 1000 people belonging to the Backward class in government lands, Mr Yediyurappa said the government was itself coming to the doorsteps of people.

“Officials will visit door to door to distribute the regularization letters and if any officials demand bribe bring to the notice of the government which will take action against such persons,” he said.

Bengaluru, Jul 3: Karnataka Health Department on Thursday permitted District Health Departments to appoint doctors with MBBS, on a contractual basis with permission of concerned District Health Officers and Commissioners, a statement said.

The state government has also hiked the salary of contractual doctors from Rs 45000 to Rs 60000 per month.

Earlier in the day, Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu urged contract doctors to continue offering their services amid their demand for regularisation of services.

"I request the contract doctors with folded hands to continue offering their services. With regard to their two demands, one of salary hike and the other being permanency, I assure all of them that I stand with them and their requests will definitely be fulfilled," said Mr Sriramulu.

The Chief Minister had also discussed about the two issues yesterday and agreed to facilitate the pay hike, he added.

Mangaluru, Apr 12: The spread of COVID-19 in the country has been contained through the prompt, effective and timely measures taken by the Centre, BJP Karnataka president and Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said on Sunday.
 
The Centre brought in stringent regulations including the lockdown at the right time and ensured that the pandemic did not spread rapidly, he told reporters here.
 
Kateel inspected the railway coaches which have been converted into isolation wards for infected patients at the central railway station here.
 
He said 20 out of the 32 railway coaches re-designed into wards by Southern Railway's Palakkad division, will be stationed here.
 
The wards are equipped with necessary medical equipment and facilities for doctors and paramedical staff.
 
Kateel said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shown how such difficult situations need to be handled.
 
The lockdown was announced in time so that coronavirus spread was checked and all the central departments carried out their works efficiently to monitor the situation, he said.
 
Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath was also present.
