volvoMangalore, September 4: Introduction of Volvo buses by withdrawing 'Rajahamsa' services on certain routes have caused losses to the KSRTC in Mangalore division, Praveen Kumar, General Secretary, KSRTC Joint Committee of Workers' Unions, Mangalore, said.

Addressing mediapersons at Press Club in Mangalore on Tuesday, Mr. Kumar said that introduction of buses to routes such as Panaji besides others by withdrawing 'Rajahamsa' executive buses have been causing losses to the Corporation's Mangalore division. “We have been requesting the top brass not to introduce more Volvo buses as the already introduced Volvo services have caused losses. The private bus operators keep changing the rates while our rates remain the same and hence KSRTC fails to attract passengers. Withdrawing Rajahamsa buses and replacing them with Volvo services have not worked in our favour”, Mr. Kumar said, voicing the concern of the KSRTC workers on the occasion.

Introduction of new Parisara Vahini buses should be given priority instead, Mr. Kumar opined. “For long, people have been nursing a notion that KSRTC buses are sub-standard in quality but the recently introduced Parisara Vahini buses have evoked good responses from public. In routes such as Mudupi where these new buses have been introduced, there is a good public response. However, private bus workers and conductors have been troubling us in these routes ever since our new buses have started plying there”, he said.

'Workers being exploited'

Mr. Kumar said that KSRTC workers are being exploited by the Corporation's administrative authorities. “We have been experiencing injustice and exploitation in terms of less salaries, unjustified punishments, inhuman behaviour with workers, besides others for the past 16 years. We are made to work overtime but no extra pay is given to us. Some workers who hail from North Karnataka take long leaves and go back to their villages and we are made to do double the amount of work in their absence”, Mr. Kumar groused.

The Workers' Union will go on an indefinite strike on September 13 demanding fulfillment of its various demands, Mr. Kumar informed.

Mysuru, Jan 20: Fears over CAA and proposed NRC have affected the ongoing 7th economic census. Following complaints of violence against enumerators and registration of FIR with people declining to give information, the state government has asked deputy commissioners and superintendents of police to hold awareness programmes about it.

The planning, programme monitoring & statistics department has requested the home department to provide cooperation at the police station level while additional chief secretary P Ravi Kumar, in his letter to all DCs, has asked them to create awareness. According to sources, enumerators in T Narasipura town of Mysuru district faced resistance as some residents misunderstood the reason for this census.

A senior officer of the directorate of economics and statistics said that additional chief secretary (ACS- Planning, Programme Monitoring & Statistics Department) Shalini Rajneesh has written to the home department and superintendents of police of all districts seeking their help to create awareness about the economic census.

According to sources in the directorate, in many places, people are refusing to share information under the misconception that it is related to CAA/ NRC. “Many are mistaken about the economic census. As a precaution, police help has been sought,” an officer said.

Authorities in Mysuru said the 7th economic census began on December 20 and will conclude on March 30.

“In Mysuru city alone, we need to cover a population of 11 lakh. In T Narasipura, we faced problems due to misconceptions about Census and CAA. We reported the incident which happened in an area where minorities reside in large numbers,” he explained. Mysuru SP CB Rishyanth said his office has not received any direction in this matter.
