Body of schoolgirl who jumped off Bantwal bridge found in Manjeshwar

Mangalore, September 4: The body of a schoolgirl who had committed suicide by jumping into Nethravathi River eight days ago has been found on the shores of Manjeshwar beach.

The deceased has been identified as Sonali Patel (15), daughter of Ashwin and Alpha Patel of Mohan compound in Krishnanagara, Puttur. Her body was found at Manjeshwar beach on Monday evening.

A 10th standard student of Sudana school, Puttur, Sonali had jumped from a bridge into River Nethravati on August 27 at Panemangalur near Bantwal. Based on the information provided by one of the locals who witnessed her suicidal act, emergency and rescue services were pressed into action but her body could not be found.

At about 7 pm on Monday, locals saw her body floating at Manjeshwar beach and informed the police. Following passing of information from Manjeshwar police to Puttur police, Sonali's parents arrived at Manjeshwar and identified her body.

On August 27, she had left for school along with her siblings Pragati and Sujal but refused to return home with them stating that she had to go to Mangala Stores. That evening she came to Panemangalur and committed suicide by jumping off the bridge into the river. She was reportedly weak in studies and this reason is being attributed as the cause of her extreme step.

Sonali's family which hails from Gujarat has been living in Puttur from the past 10 years.

Mangaluru, Feb 21: The local units of Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal today staged a protest in the city against Amulya Leona, who raised pro-Pakistan slogans yesterday in Bangaluru.

Amulya is the daughter of Wazi Noronha, a former leader of minority of wing of BJP in Koppa taluk of Chikkamagaluru district. He had worked in support of hardline BJP leader and Udupi-Chickmagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje, and D N Jeevaraj, who had represented Sringeri constituency last time.

The 19-year-old B.A. student was arrested on sedition charge after she raised pro-Pakistan slogans to embarrass the organisers of a peaceful protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Bengaluru.

Demanding stringent action against Amulya, a group of activist of VHP and Bajrang Dal staged protest at Kadri Mallikatte Circle in the city. Speaking on the occasion, M B Puranik and Sharan Pumpwell demanded NIA probe into the incident.

Mangaluru, Mar 23: Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Monday announced to enhance surveillance along the coastline of Karnataka to strengthen security.

It has tasked its hovercraft in New Mangalore, and high-speed patrol vessels and interceptor boats along the coastline for ensuring foolproof security of the uninhabited islands, Deputy Inspector General S B Venkatesh, Commander, Coast Guard, Karnataka, said in a release today.

The amphibious hovercraft have been deployed for near to coast patrol, to facilitate smooth execution of search and rescue operations and security cover over land and riverine route. Please log in to get detailed story.

Bengaluru, May 3: Five more COVID-19 cases have been reported from Karnataka, taking the total number of coronavirus cases in the state to 606, the state government said on Sunday.

The total number of cases includes, 25 deaths and 282 discharged.

"Five new COVID-19 positive cases have been reported in Karnataka from 2nd May, 5 pm to 3rd May, 12 noon; taking the total number of positive cases to 606 which includes 25 deaths and 282 discharges," the government stated.

According to the statement, out of the five cases, three have been reported from Kalaburagi and two have been identified from Mudhol.
