girlMangalore, September 5: In a fresh incident of communal terrorism, a group of hatemongering students barged into a class-room, hurled abusive words against Muslim girls, who were sitting there, and mercilessly assaulted one among them inside the campus of a government college on the outskirts of the city.

The incident which occurred on Tuesday afternoon at Dr. Shivaram Karanth Government First Grade College, Bellare, in Sullia Taluk of Dakshina Kannada district, triggered communal tension in the region.

The victim Sajida (name changed), claimed that even though a group of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad activists dragged her in front of other students, thrashed and pushed her to the ground without any provocation, the principal and few other lecturers of the College admonished her “not to blow the issue out of proportion”.

The final year student of Bachelor of Arts, who was hospitalised after the inhuman assault, said that the assailants also tore her dress and threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed the matter to her parents or reported to police.

The assailants include six students from final year B.Com identified as Rajnish, Amruth, Jayaprakash, Sudarshan, Nithyanada, Pramod, one student from final year BA identified as Hemacharya and two students from second year BA identified as Ajit and Udaya.

College Bundh

Sajida said that many of her classmates boycotted the classes and staged a protest on Tuesday in response to a nationwide college bundh call given by ABVP and Youth Against Corruption demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the wake of the alleged coal block allocation controversy.

“We, a group of 5-6 final year BA girls entered classroom on time and waited till afternoon. Unfortunately, neither any lecturer came to our classroom nor they declared a holiday. At around 1:00 pm, when we had just opened our lunch boxes, a B.Com student from our College started at us for some time and left. A couple of minutes later he came back along with a group of his mischievous friends, who began to shout at us. When, one among the intruders used abusive words against our parents, we warned them against misbehaving with girls. We also warned those B.Com students not to enter BA classroom without permission”, she said.

Manhandled

Sajida said that within a few minutes after the incident she and her friends decided to go home. “When we stepped out of the classroom the same group surrounded us. They manhandled me and violently pushed me to the ground”, she said.

“They also used abusive words against me and my friends, our mothers and our community”, she added.

Don't repeat it please!

She said that though she revealed the entire incident to the principal and other lecturers, they did not take it seriously. “They summoned the students, who manhandled me, asked them not to repeat such behaviour in future and let them off. They also asked us to forget the incident,” she said.

Warning

Disheartened by attitude of the principal, while Sajida was walking home, the same group of ABVP miscreants once again encountered her and warned her against revealing about the incident to anyone. “They threatened that they would storm into our house and harm everyone if I revealed the matter. I immediately ran towards home and revealed everything to my elders”, she said. Later a complaint was lodged with jurisdictional Bellare police station.

Scarf Issue

One of the classmates of Sajida on condition of anonymity said that the ABVP activists were deliberately spreading hatred between Hindu and Muslim students of the college since many days.

She said that a couple of weeks ago some of the ABVP activists had insisted Muslim girls not to wear scarf inside the campus or classroom. “We had ignored them and continued to wear scarf. But, now they have crossed all the limits”, she said.

Kochi, Jan 12: Golden Kayaloram, the fourth and last Maradu residential apartment was razed by controlled implosion in Kochi on Sunday afternoon as per the directions of the Supreme Court.

The building came crashing down, leaving the entire area in a cover of white smoke.

Earlier today, Jain Coral Cove, the apartment having the maximum number of housing units among the illegally built buildings, was razed down at 11:02 am.

The authorities coordinated the operations from a control room set up at the office of the Inland Waterways Authority of India.

As per municipal records, there were 122 housing units in Jain Coral Cove and 41 in Golden Kayaloram.

The prohibitory orders that were clamped in the area will remain imposed for the day. The district administration on Saturday imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

On Saturday, the 19-floor H2O Holy Faith apartment complex with 90 flats and the Alfa Serene complex with twin towers were demolished at 11 am and 11:05 am respectively.

The buildings are razed for violating the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules. The directions in this regard were passed by the Supreme Court last year.

Bengaluru, Jan 21: A private hospital in Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, on Tuesday claimed that it has successfully performed a live liver transplant on a Jehovah's Witness from Nigeria, by not using blood or blood products, in order to protect the patient's religious beliefs.

It is said that Jehovah's Witnesses are followers of a Christian faith that prohibits the use of blood or blood products during their treatment. Gehojadak (37), a Jehovah's Witness follower, had developed decompensated liver disease and visited more than three countries seeking treatment over the last four years but was turned away by most doctors due to the highly risky nature of surgery, Aster CMI Hospital said.

The surgery was challenging compared to a normal liver transplant because in order to protect the patient's religious beliefs, the medical team could not use blood or blood products (Fresh frozen plasma, Cryoprecipitate, Platelets etc), it said in a release, adding that very few such surgeries have been successfully conducted worldwide.

The patient's brother was the donor, the hospital said, adding, without a liver transplant, Gehojadak's chances of survival were less than 10 per cent over the next two years. A team of liver specialists from the Hospital thoroughly reviewed the patient's medical history before recommending a bloodless liver transplant and charted out a feasible pathway to make the surgery a success.

"This transplant was especially challenging as we did not have the safety net (of using blood) even if the patient's life was at risk due to their advance directive. We have performed other non-transplant liver surgeries in Jehovah's Witnesses and this gave us the confidence to take on Gehojadak's transplant," Dr Rajiv Lochan, Consultant Liver Transplant Surgeon, said.

The critical surgery took a 12-hour period to complete where two teams of specialists with close to 25 doctors including anaesthetists, intensivists worked in absolute sync with each other and Gehojadak finally received a life-saving liver transplant, the Hospital said. In a period of two weeks, the patient and his brother were fit enough to go home and were discharged from the hospital.

"Even if their haemoglobin levels dropped to life-threatening levels, the patients were clear that they would not accept a blood transfusion. Keeping the limitations in mind, the most effective treatment path was planned, and we spent close to two months preparing the patients for surgery," Arun V, Consultant Anesthesiologist said. The hospital arranged customised artificial products like synthetic drug molecules, to conduct a bloodless liver transplant, he added.

Bengaluru, Jul 19: Three legislators of the opposition Congress in Karnataka, including 2 MLAs and 1 MLC tested positive for coronavirus and are under treatment, a party official said on Saturday.

"Our Bailhongal MLA Mahantesh Koujalgi in Belagavi district and Humnabad MLA Rajashekhar Patil and his MLC brother Chandrashekhar Patil in Bidar district tested positive for the infection and are under treatment at designated hospitals," party spokesman Ravi Gowda told media persons in Bangaluru.

Koujalgi's swab sample was taken on Friday after he showed signs of illness and its result turned positive earlier in the day.

"As Koujalgi attended a review meeting at Bailhongal, about 20 officials who participated in the meeting have been home quarantined," said Gowda.

Koujalgi is the second lawmaker in the state's northwest region to test positive after BJP's Belagavi North assembly segment MLA Anik Benake tested positive for the virus on July 15.

"Patil brothers were in self quarantine after meeting BJP's Bidar Lok Sabha member Bhagwanth Khuba, who tested positive on Wednesday. Their tests also showed they were infected with the virus," Gowda said.

Congress MLC Sandesh Nagaraj, who tested positive on Friday, is under treatment at a private hospital in Mysuru.
