Don't impose morals on children, teachers told

Mangalore, September 5: Teachers must allow children to learn and opt as to what morals they need to follow in life rather than imposing morals on them, Dr. Mahabaleshwar Rao, Principal, Dr. TMA Pai College of Education said.

He was speaking at a programme organized jointly by DK Zilla Panchayat and Department of Public Instructions as part of 'Tachers' Day' celebrations in Mangalore on Wednesday.

Expressing displeasure over the tussle that goes into achieving awards meant for teachers, Dr. Rao opined that instead of teachers applying for the awards themselves, their secret evaluation must be carried out by an orgainsation to honour the deserving candidates.

N Yogish Bhat, Deputy Speaker, Karnataka Legislative Assembly, said that perfection must be one of the goals of education.

Teachers from different parts of the district were felicitated on the occasion. U T Khader, MLA, Gulzar Banu, Mayor, Shailaja Bhat, President, DK Zilla Panchayat, Amithakala, Deputy Mayor, Dr. K N Vijayprakash, CEO, DK Zilla Panchayat were present besides others.

Bengaluru, Jun 5: An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 on the Richter Scale jolted Karnataka on Friday morning while another with a magnitude of 4.7 was felt in Jharkhand.

The tremors were felt in Hampi (Karnataka) and Jamshedpur (Jharkhand), according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

According to NCS, the aftershocks were felt at 6:55 am in both the places today.

Mangaluru, Feb 13: The Customs Officers of Airport Team-II at Mangalore International Airport (MIA) on Thursday intercepted a passenger who attempted to smuggle gold worth Rs 9.39 lakhs.

The team led by Rajesh Poojary nabbed the passenger who attempted to smuggle 233.18 grams of gold strips concealed inside a rechargeable emergency light and solar sensor wall light.

The officials said a passenger named Mohammed Mahir Patla (24) from Kasaragod, who arrived from Dubai yesterday evening by Air India flight number IX384 attempted to smuggle the gold.

Bengaluru, May 5: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Tuesday said that the coronavirus situation in the state is "under control" as compared to several other states in the country.

He also hinted that soon the construction and industrial activities would be allowed in the state except in the red zones.

"Coronavirus situation in the state is under control as compared to other states. Due to this, travel of migrant workers was prohibited. Now, trade, construction and industrial activities need to restart, except in the red zones," he told reporters.

According to the Karnataka Health Department, the state has so far recorded 659 COVID-19 cases, including 324 discharged and 28 deaths.
