Bangalore, September 8: Undue delays in issue of police clearance certificates for passport applications submitted by minorities, topped a slew of issues raised during an interaction between elected representatives, NGOs, representatives of various forums and National?Commission for Minorities Vice-Chairman H?T?Sangliana in Bangalore on Friday.

Speaking during the interaction, Congress MLA?N?A Harris charged that minorities were facing problems while obtaining police clearance certificates for passports and sought to know the reason for the same. “There is an inordinate delay in police clearance. During my four-and-a-half-year tenure as MLA, only people from minority communities come to me with this problem.?Why cannot minorities be treated on par with others,” he questioned.

Sangliana said he would take up the matter during his internal discussions with top government officials.

Another Congress MLA?Tanveer Sait said government had stipulated that an educational institution should have 75 per cent of students from minority community to be declared a minority institution. Sait said if the norm was followed there would be no minority educational institution in the State and sought the government to relax the norm.

Sait said there was delay in sanctioning of scholarships to minority students. He also urged the government to petition the Centre to enhance the quantum of grants provided as scholarships to minority students.

State Minority Commission chief Anwar Manippady claimed that some minority educational institutions were collecting donations from minority students.

“The privileges being provided to minority institutions is to ensure that they provide quality education for the students. However, by collecting donations from minority students, they are defeating the very purpose of their existence,” he said.

The meeting also discussed the hardships being faced by educational institutions in getting minority status certificate from the State government. Chief Secretary S?V?Ranganath, who was present at the meeting, said efforts would be made to simplify the procedure.

Congress legislator U?T?Khader pointed out that a Cabinet meeting on Thursday had dropped charges on various ABVP?activists, at a time when the same group had attacked a girl for not responding to their college bandh call this week.

Sangliana said he had taken note of the matter and had already discussed the same when he had called on Chief Minister Jagadish?Shettar earlier in the day.

An invitee to the meeting sought that the police officers from the minority communities be deployed in areas with large population of minorities. Sangliana said the commission had already taken programmes for resensitisation of police with respect to minority communities.

Tanveer Sait drew attention to the shortage of staff in the minority welfare department and pointed out that even Cadre and Recruitment (C&R) rules had not been framed. Ranganath said he will attend to the matter on top priority.

Home Secretary V?Umesh, ADGP?(Law and Order) Bipin Gopalkrishna and Minority Department Principal Secretary P?B?Ramamurthy were present.

Today, a person identified as Abdul Rasheed was transporting around 200 kilograms of beef from Kudroli abattoir to Kankanady market.

Meanwhile, miscreants began to chase beef laden vehicle and managed to waylay it near Highland Hospital. They thrashed Abdul Rasheed and poured kerosene on the beef besides damaging the vehicle.

The miscreants fled in their car and motorbikes after passersby began to gather.

Dear DC Dr. Harsha, we want to know if you will take strict action on these anti nationals / rowdis / day robbers / terrorists who ransacked auto + beaten the auto driwer and stolen Rs. 10,000 from him though he was legally transporting the meat.   They same terrorists are involved in transporting live animals to beef export houses in Gujrat owned by Brahmins / Jains.   Will you be loyal to your duty and promise.   We will see how you will handle the issue failing which you will lose our respect and we will consider you as a dramabaz and phenku.   You should follow the law and treat everyone equally.  There should not be any pity on goondas/ terrorists belonging to sangh parivar.   The terrorists who thrashed the auto driver and damaged the auto and burnt the meat by pouring kerosene are not human beings and should be treated as anti nationals + terrorists.    We hope you will discharge your duty as per the oath taken by you while accepting your post.

Bengaluru, Jan 18: The Karnataka state government has reportedly initiated the process to ban organizations like Popular Front of India (PFI).

State Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Friday evening said that instructions have been given to the police and officers concerned to gather information about the activities of such organisations so that necessary inputs can be sent to the Center.

He made it clear that the action would not be limited against PFI and SDFI (Social Democratic Front of India), rather any organisation which is involved in such activities, would meet the same fate.

Bengaluru, Mar 3: Bengaluru mayor Gautam Kumar on Tuesday said that the decision to ban protests in front of Town Hall was made by the council and not only by him.

"The decision to ban the protest in front of the Town Hall was made by the entire council and not only my decision. Also, the things which are approved by the councillor are also read by the ruling party leaders," Bengaluru mayor told media.

"Still it is the discretion of the Commissioner to take a call after the council also. As of now, we have banned any protests in front of Town Hall," he added.

Meanwhile, Congress leaders staged a protest against Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Mayor Gautam Kumar and BJP at Council BBMP building against the decision.

"If people will start protesting, it will badly affect the traffic of the city," said Kumar, while commenting on the protest. If they want to talk about the matter, let us have a healthy discussion. I don't have a problem with and I don't think the ruling party has a problem too," he added.

On Sunday, pro-Kannada activist and former MLA Vatal Nagraj staged a protest in front of Sir KP Puttanna Chetty Town Hall (Bangalore Town Hall) against the decision taken by Bengaluru mayor.

Talking to reporters, Nagraj had said: "He does not know the history of the Town Hall. It is a historic building and protests can be staged there."

"Mayor's decision is against Bengaluru's tradition and culture, that's why we are condemning it and are protesting against this decision. We will not allow Mayor's programs in Bengaluru and he will be shown black flags", he added.
