Mangalore, September 8: Students from the Beary community who had achieved high percentage were awarded scholarships at a programme organised by Bangalore based Bearys' Welfare Association, at Jamiyyatul Falah Hall in the city on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, Vinay Kumar Sorake, Secretary of All India Congress Committee, stressed on the importance of education and said that problems like poverty could be erased only by means of education. Education can transform lives of those living in inequality, he said.

He said that the world was filled with opportunities, and there was a need to encourage students pursuing streams like IAS, IPS, Law and MBA.

U T Khader, Mangalore MLA, said that it was the responsibility of the parents to ensure good education to their children. “Those born in poverty need not die in poverty. If you wish to live in dignity, then importance to education is essential. Parents need to believe in their children, for they will look after you in tough times”, he said.

He said that education was necessary, but not at the cost of driving one's parents or relatives into old-age homes. He said that brotherliness, tolerance and harmony between people of different communities should be improved. “Problems should be solved by having peaceful discussions, rather than fighting it over. There should be an opportunity for easy dialogue,” he said.

T N S Murthy, Deputy Chairman of New Mangalore Port Trust, said that there should be an urge in each person to achieve something. “If everything is handed over easily, one will not appreciate its value. Continue to dream and one day you will achieve it,” he advised the students.

S S Nayak, Founder of Expert Institute, told the students to focus on their goal. “Always choose what you like, or else you will be forced to like what you choose,” he said.

Around 100 students from the Beary community were awarded scholarships on the occasion, in which girls heavily outnumbered the boy achievers.
