Mangalore, September 9: If the plans of the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy materialise, activities to promote the language may soon get a shot in the arm with the setting up of a Beary bhavan. The bhavan will also serve as an information centre for those learning the language.

Speaking at “Pernal Sandola”, a cultural programme organised at the Town Hall here on Saturday, Rahim Uchila, president of the academy, said 0.27 acre of land had been identified for the construction of the bhavan.

The academy was awaiting a response from Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) for sanctioning land and funds.

Among the more ambitious plans, Mr. Uchila said the academy would pressure the government for establishing a cell for Beary studies, and organising of World Beary Literature Conference.

“Pernal Sandola”, roughly translating to the joy of Eid festivities, sought to bring Beary culture to speakers in the city. The programme started with an hour of popular Beary songs, before Monappa Bhandary, MLC, formally inaugurated it by striking the traditional “duff” percussion instrument.

The academy will launch a series of programmes starting Sunday, wherein on every second and fourth Sunday, a troupe would tour different Assembly segments in the district.

Department officials have been directed to include employees of state-owned temples under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyothi Bima scheme and also enrol them under State Bank of India’s group personal accident insurance policy at the earliest. The Central insurance scheme will provide Rs 2 lakh cover to family members in case of death due to accidents.
