Attack on college girl: Sangliana warns ABVP activists

Bangalore, September 9: National Commission for Minorities (NCM) vice-chairman H T Sangliana has strongly condemned the ABVP attack on a Muslim girl at Dr. Shivaram Karanth Government First Grade College, Bellare in Dakshina Kannada district.

Addressing media persons here on Saturday he said that NCM had already shared its concern over the episode with Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, Deputy Chief Minister R. Ashok, who holds the Home portfolio, and Governor H.R. Bhardwaj.

The former police officer also warned that those indulging in such violence would not get government jobs if their names get into police records for the offences committed.

He sought to remind the youth with a tendency to take the law into their own hands that as per norms, police verification would have to be done to know the antecedents of candidates when they get selected for government service, including civil services.

“If your names are found in police records for indulging in violence the selection for government jobs gets cancelled even if you have double postgraduate degrees”, he said.

Appealing to the activists to desist from taking law into their own hands, he said: “If you have any grievance, you can always take them up with the deputy commissioners and superintendents of police.”

Mr. Sangliana also asked the police to talk to ABVP activists and advise them sternly not to resort to violence. “It has to be handled properly, and there should be no hurry with regard to withdrawal of cases,” he remarked.

Congress opposing CAA to keep vote bank intact: S L Bhyrappa

Mysuru, Jan 11: Accusing the Congress and other opposition parties of pursuing “vote bank politics” on the Citizenship (Amendment ) Act (CAA), Kannada littérateur and Saraswathi Samman awardee S L Byrappa accused the party of misleading the people on the issue.

Speaking to media persons here on Friday, Mr Bhyrappa said that Congress was adopting the divide and rule policy of the British, who had created a rift between the Hindus and the Muslims to break their unity during the freedom struggle.

Petrol, diesel prices go up in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Apr 1: The price of petrol and diesel will go up by Rs 1.60 and Rs 1.59 per litre, respectively, from Wednesday. This is in line with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa’s decision to hike the rate of tax on petrol from 32% to 35% and diesel from 21% to 24%.

He had announced this in his March 5 Budget for 2020-21 fiscal. At present, a litre of petrol costs Rs 71.97 and diesel Rs 64.41 in Bengaluru.

The government decided to roll out the hike from Tuesday midnight going into Wednesday, April 1, after briefly considering a postponement in view of the COVID-19 crisis.

Finance Secretary (Budget & Resources) Ekroop Caur confirmed to DH that the hike will be rolled out.

The 3% hike on fuel tax was a key resource mobilisation measure that Yediyurappa announced in his Budget. The hike is expected to fetch the government Rs 1,500 crore.

Yediyurappa had also announced a 6% additional excise duty on Indian Made Liquor (IML), which could help the government mop up Rs 1,200 crore. However, the sale of liquor has been prohibited during the lockdown period. Plus, hiking fuel prices during the lockdown will not hit citizens very hard.

Manglauru: Muslim orgs to hold awareness meet against CAA, NRC on Jan 15

Mangaluru, Jan 8: The Muslim Central Committee of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, has finally received green signal from the city police to hold an awareness meet against CAA, NRC and NPR on January 15, but on the outskirts of the city.

The Committee, which is a kind of umbrella body of Muslim organisations of the two coastal districts, had twice cancelled its planned protest against the same at Nehru Maidan, in the heart of the city due to permission denial by the city police.

Addressing a press conference here today, Committee chairman, KS Mohammed Masood said that event will be held at Shaha Garden near Central Juma Masjid at Adyar Kannur.

He said that the representatives from the 28 different organisations unanimously finalised the date and venue after a consultations as the police refused to grant permission to hold the event at Nehru Maidan or Town Hall.

Representatives of various organisations including S M Rasheed Haji, Ibrahim Kodichal, B M Mumtaz Ali, Rafeeuddin Kudroli and Abdul Rasheed Zaini were present at the press meet.
