Bhatkal, September 14: The incidents of the cattle theft which were left by the farmers for grazing were continuously being reported in Bhatkal, and finally on last Wednesday, the police got successful in finding the clues about the thieves who were involved in such acts. But, unfortunately, the police have not yet succeeded in getting their hands on the real culprits. However, both the culprits have been seen actively taking part in the protests which were staged in Bhatkal by the Hindu Jagaran Vedike in the name of protection of animals and also in all the clashes which takes place regarding the same issue.

According to the sources, the farmers in the Muttalli rural area of Bhatkal, their animals when left for grazing, would suddenly go missing. These incidents highly worried the farmers who had brought the animals after spending thousands of rupees and issuing bank loans. The repeated police station visits fetched them no results. One of such incidents took place on September 2, when a buffalo which was grazing went missing.

The farmers tried to locate their animals taking rounds of all the possible places, but in vain. On September 11, a farmer named Shaniyar Naik, accidently found his cattle tied in a compound in Magdoom Colony. He immediately informed the police about it and police raided the particular place. The police arrested two people named Hasan Shabbir Muhammed Ismail and Abdus Sami Abubakar Mukhtasar and took along the four animals which were found in the same compound into their custody. After questioning both the arrested persons, it was amazingly revealed that all the four animals were sold to them by two persons named Mastappa Naik and Parmeshwar Naik, both hailing from Kundakodlu.

Hasan Shabbar and Abdus Sami informed the police that Mastappa and Parmeshwar had themselves brought the animals to their homes in Magdoom Colony and they had purchased the animals from them after paying a good amount. After further investigations the police found out that both Mastappa Naik and Parmeshwar Naik would trap the animals left for grazing and later sell them to the butchers for high amounts. When the police reached the home of the culprits to arrest them, both had already fled away from their homes.

The Muttalli farmers informed the police that all the four seized animals belonged to them. One buffalo belonged to Shaniyar Kupayya Naik, other to Krishna Mastappa Naik and remaining two to Sanamma Narayan Naik.

It should be noted that both the accused, Mastappa Naik and Parmeshwar Naik would always be forward in the protests which are organized by the HJV. They would especially be forward in interfering in the matters related to illegal transportation of cattle and would always indulge in violence with the people who tried to question them.

When the locals of Muttalli got to know that the same persons who would always talk about the cattle protection are themselves involved in filling their pockets by selling the stolen cattle to the local butchers, it shocked them to the core. A crowd of Muttalli locals gathered at the police station and demanded the stringent legal actions against the culprits.

All the three farmers have filed the complaint at the town police station. Under the guidance of Asst. SP Sudheer Kumar Reddy, the CPI Shiv Prakash and the PSI Prakash Devagida are investigating the case. The police have assured the farmers that the culprits who had fled away will be arrested at the earliest.

Mangaluru, Jun 12: A huge crowd gathered for the grand opening of the newly built 175-metre-long two-lane bridge across Phalguni River on National Highway 169 near Gurupura on the outskirts of the city today.

Even as the photos of the bridge inauguration ceremony went viral on social media, netizens took the elected representatives and the district administration to task for flouting safety norms at a time when the coronavirus cases are continuing to mount in coastal Karnataka.

The bridge was completed in a record time of 15 months. Dakshina Kannada MP and State BJP President Nalin Kumar Kateel and district in-charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojari inaugurated the bridge in the presence of Mangaluru City North MLA Y. Bharath Shetty and others.

The bridge has come as a breather to thousands of travellers between Mangaluru-Moodbidri-Karkala on the busy NH. The age-old steel bridge had become dilapidated and was a cause for concern for road users. The highway is also under the process of getting widened to four lanes.

The bridge was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 30 crore by contractor Sudhakar Shetty of Mugrodi Construction. Work started in February last and the contractor had time till February next.

While the two-lane carriageway is 16 metres wide, the bridge has 2.5-metre-wide pedestrian paths on both the sides. New approach roads of 500 metres each were also part of the project.

Bengaluru, Apr 20: As many as 59 people were arrested on Monday for attacking police and health officials at the minority dominated Padarayanapura in the city when they went to quarantine some people, police said.

"Fifty-nine people have been arrested (in Padarayanapura) and have been taken into custody. The people attacked the officials who had gone to quarantine some poeple who were the primary and secondary contacts of three COVID-19 patients," a police officer said.

A large number of people, mostly youth from the minority community poured on to the road on Sunday and thrashed the health workers who had gone to quarantine some people who were the primary and secondary contacts of the health workers.

The officials were allegedly beaten black and blue.

Some local residents who went to the rescue of these officials were also thrashed.

According to police, one among the arrested is a woman by name Firoza who had allegedly instigated the mob to attack the health and police officials.

Subsequently, a large number of police personnel were deployed in the area to avert any untoward incident and to quarantine those who are suspected to be infected with COVID- 19.

Blowing sirens, a strong contingent of policemen carried out a flag march in the area.

The Bengaluru police commissioner Bhaskar Rao later called on Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa and briefed him about the situation in Padayarayanapura.

The violent incident drew angry reactions from various quarters.

Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said an incident like the one at Padayarayanapura will not be tolerated.

"I met Chief Minister and briefed him about the incident. He has told us to act strictly. I have told the same to my officials. We won't tolerate such acts by anyone. We have arrested 59 people. Five FIRs have been registered," the minister told reporters.

Bommai, who visited the area took the senior police officials to task for not being present on the spot when the incident took place.

"Where were you? What were you doing when the incident happened?" he questioned a senior police officer.

"We will demonstrate to the people what is containment zone, what is seal down and what is police action," he said.

Condemning the incident, Health Minister B Srimulu warned those who indulged in such activities.

"The inhuman act of attacking police and health workers in Padarayanapura is highly deplorable. Our government will take appropriate step against those indulging in the attack on health officials and police officials who had gone there to protect them," he tweeted.

BJP's firebrand MP Shobha Karandlaje reacted sharply.

"Seculars attack #CoronaWarriors when they were quarantining the secondary contacts of #Covid19 in Padarayanapura of BLR. While #HealthcareHeroes are working overnight to contain #CoronaPandemic, these morons are assaulting our heroes! Let's not be soft on these anti- nationals!" Karandlaje tweeted.

Meanwhile, the minority leaders called on Congress state president D K Shivakumar to persuade the people of the minority community to assist in identifying the COVID-19 patients or carriers.

Former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy too condemned the attack and demanded stringent action against the culprits.

The Congress MLA from the area B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan while condemning the incident, sought to know why the health workers and police officials went to the area late in the night and not in the morning.

"Why did the police and the health workers go in the night when I had told the BBMP Commissioner that I will take them at 10 am?" Khan told reporters.

Defending those who attacked the government officials, Khan said they were uneducated labourers who didn't know what they were doing.

Padarayanapura and Bapuji Nagar were among the first areas to be completely sealed as people were not abiding by the prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC.
