Concern mounts over growing menace of 'saffronisation' of textbooks

Mangalore, September 15: Pledging to continue its struggle against 'saffronisation' of education by the BJP-led Karnataka state government, the 'Committee to Fight against Saffronisation of Textbooks', a newly formed body of experts, has pointed out that the National Curriculum Framework (NCF 2005) had been violated while preparing textbooks of class V and VIII for the current academic year.

Addressing media persons at a press conference here on Friday, president of the Committee Suresh Bhat Bakrabail, said that after the 'saffronisation' of social, cultural and administrative sectors the BJP government has been continuing its undemocratic drive through the saffronisation of education sector.

As per the NCF 2005 guidelines, published by NCERT, the textbooks should strive to strengthen democracy, and the pluralism which was the main feature of Indian culture. However the new textbooks attack the values of democracy and pluralism due to the apparent 'saffronisation' drive by the ruling saffron party of the state, said Mr Bakrabail.

He also said that apart from the saffronisation of text books of Class V and VIII, the Committee also has received information that the 'saffronised' textbooks of Class VI, VII, IX and X for the next academic year, have already been finalised and would go for printing soon.

“Such a development will affect the tender minds of school-going children, which will have far-reaching consequences,” he said.

It is the need of the hour to question such a communal move that could result in formation of a communal and intolerant society, he said.

Citing example of a Class VIII Hindi textbook in Bangalore division, he said that the text in the original song 'Punyakoti' had been twisted at the end. In the new version of the song the tiger takes an oath to refrain from beef eating.

Walter Maben, a member of the Committee said that a state-level seminar would be organised on Sunday as part of their programmes to create awareness among people about the saffronisation of the textbooks.

Priests, other staff in temples to get insurance cover in Karnataka

Mangaluru, Jul 26: Karnataka government has initiated steps to provide insurance cover for priests and others working in temples coming under the Endowment Department -- a move that will benefit 50,000 people and their families.

Speaking to media here on Saturday evening, Minister for Endowment Kota Srinivas Poojary said there is a need to implement the decision at the earliest to provide relief to the priests and families of employees working in temples.

Department officials have been directed to include employees of state-owned temples under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyothi Bima scheme and also enrol them under State Bank of India’s group personal accident insurance policy at the earliest. The Central insurance scheme will provide Rs 2 lakh cover to family members in case of death due to accidents.

Karnataka conducts 2.03 lakh corona tests in ICMR labs, tests doubled in 16 days

Bengaluru, May 24: Karnataka has conducted 2.03 lakh tests across the 57 Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) COVID-19 testing labs till Sunday morning, said the state Minister of Medical Education Dr K Sudhakar.

He informed that the state has doubled the number of tests in just 16 days after clocking 1 lakh tests on May 8.

"After clocking 1 lakh tests on May 8, we have doubled the number of tests in just 16 days. As on this morning, we conducted 2.03 lakh tests across our 57 ICMR COVID-19 testing labs. I congratulate doctors and lab technicians on this achievement," Sudhakar tweeted.

As many as 1,743 people have been detected positive for coronavirus in the state, of which 597 have been cured and discharged and 41 have succumbed to the infection, as per the Union Health Ministry.

Here's the first phase flight plan for return of Indian nationals stranded abroad

Newsroom, May 5: Following the union government's nod, preparations are afoot to bring back Indian nationals stranded abroad from May 7 onwards.

According to sources, in the first phase from May 7- 14, the government would allow more than 60 “non-scheduled, commercial” flights to operate from about 12 countries to India to bring back 15,000 citizens. At least half of those flights will be from the Gulf region, including UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman, while the rest would bring passengers from the U.S., the U.K., Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and Bangladesh.

The flights would be spread over 10 States identified as having the largest numbers to return, with Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Delhi (NCR) receiving the maximum number of flights.

A meeting held at the Ministry of Civil Aviation looked specifically at flights, mainly operated by Air India, while it awaits a final plan from countries where Indians need to be airlifted from. The first flights planned at present are from Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Riyadh and Doha, flying directly to Kozhikode and Kochi.

While the full estimate of Indians needing to return home could cross ten lakhs (a million), with more than two lakhs having registered to return from the UAE alone, officials said their return would be “prioritised and staggered”.
