Media must have self-regulation'

Mangalore, September 15: Media persons and media owners must have self-regulatory mechanism in place so that they can function effectively, said Prof. Varadesh Hiregange, Director, Manipal Institute of Comunication (MIC).

 

He was speaking at a media workshop organised by the Mangalore Press Club in the city on Saturday.

 

Advising media persons to think from the point of view of the victims about whom they write, Mr. Hiregange said that such a self-regulation could bring about a huge difference in the functioning of the media.

 

Speaking about the 'paid news' phenomenon, Mr. Hiregange said that although advertisements are a part of media activity, there has to be a clear distinction between news and ads. “We must not blur the dividing line between advertisements and news. When advertorials become a part of our system, it becomes a problem”, he said. He also advised journalists to maintain a moderate approach and neither become too friendly with people nor exhibit arrogance, either of which may act as a hindrance in performing their duty.  Many journalists have developed a sense of arrogance which is evident in the TV news channel debates where the news anchors do not allow others to speak adequately, he said.

 

Mr. Hiregange also opined that to tackle professional dilemmas like capturing an act of assault or humiliation on camera, one must choose the middle path i.e. to publish blurred pictures or finding ways to reduce the impact of the images.

 

Stating that although the Indian constitution has provided certain 'reasonable restrictions' with regard to freedom of speech and expression, Mr. Hiregange said that at times issues such as security of the state, friendly relations with foreign countries, incitement to offence, sedition etc also become debatable. “It is the public interest that is of paramount importance rather than the interest of the state. Many a time the state misuses these restrictions to harass media representatives. If it is in the interest of the people, they have a right to know”, he said.

 

However, media would be treading the wrong path if it intrudes into the private lives of people especially if it does not concern the good of the country or the society, he said.

Bengaluru, May 10: Karnataka on Sunday reported 59 new cases of coronavirus, taking the total number of cases in the state to 848, informed state health department.
Out of the total number of cases, 422 people have been discharged and 31 have died due to the infection in the state.
The health department further informed that six COVID-19 patients are currently in the Intensive Care Unit.

Bengaluru, Mar 3: Chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday introduced the Karnataka Municipalities and Certain Other Law (Amendment) Bill, 2020, in the assembly to give voters the opportunity to reject candidates in civic polls.

The bill, if passed, will enable election officials to offer the NOTA option in the elections to municipal corporations on the lines of assembly and Lok Sabha polls.

An amendment bill which seeks to enable the government to set up a separate university for the districts of Raichur and Yadgir was also tabled. The government said the workload of Gulbarga University necessitated creation of a separate university for the two districts, a move that will also help reduce regional imbalance in Kalyana Karnataka region.

Another amendment bill seeks to allow industrial units, which have failed to start operations on allotted land after seven years, to sell off the parcels to another unit. Bills which empower authorised agencies to regulate turf clubs and horse racing and regulate salary and pension of teachers in higher education institutions were also introduced in the assembly on Monday.

Bengaluru, Mar 6: At least 13 persons, including women and children, were killed and five critically wounded when an SUV collided with a car that had crashed against a road divider moments ago near Kunigal in Tumakuru district of Karnataka in the early hours of Friday, police said.

Of the victims, while 12 died on the spot, a child breathed his last in a hospital, they added.

The injured were admitted to the hospital, the police said.

Among the dead, 10 were from Tamil Nadu and three from Bengaluru. All of them were pilgrims who were on their way to Dharmasthala in Karnataka.

There were five women and two children among the dead, the police said.

"Thirteen persons have died. The incident occurred post midnight. A car crashed against the road divider and another car collided with it," Tumakuru Superintendent of Police (SP) K Vamsi Krishna said.

The police had to struggle to pull the bodies out from the mangled vehicles.

On learning about the incident, relatives of the victims rushed to the spot.
