Life returns to normal in Kasargod after day-long LDF-BJP hartal

Kasargod, September 16: Life returned to normal in Kasargod district on Sunday after a day-long state-wide hartal called by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in protest against the increase in diesel prices.

Shops and business establishments reopened this morning and traffic on all routes was plying.

The hartal had evoked total response in Kasargod, where normal life was affected on Saturday. However, no untoward incidents were reported from any parts of the district, the police said. In response to the hartal call, the entire business and commercial activities came to grinding halt with shopkeepers downing shutters. Public transport vehicle operators kept off the roads.

The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses did not ply, and many got stranded at railway stations. People could be seen walking long distances. The hartal supporters staged protest marches in major towns.

Special Correspondent writes from Kannur: The 12-hour hartal was near total in Kannur.

All shops remained closed and public transport vehicles kept off the road in response to the hartal call. The roads were largely deserted, though a few two-wheelers and cars were seen plying.

The KSRTC buses here did not operate their scheduled services. No hartal-related incidents were reported in the district.

Shivamogga, Aug 5: Karnataka Minister KS Eshwarappa on Wednesday hailed the laying of foundation stone (bhoomi pujan) for a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya and said "Kashi Vishwanath and "Krishna Janmasthan temples have to be liberated".

"It is a good day that the foundation stone for Ram Temple has been laid. A beautiful temple will come up, but there are Kashi Vishwanath and Krishna Janmasthan temples which have to be liberated," Eshwarappa said.

The minister said that there is a "sign of slavery" at Krishna temple in Mathura and Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi.

"The whole nation is dreaming of Shri Krishna temple in Mathura and Kashi Vishwanath temple. I have visited the two temples. 

There is a sign of slavery. Mosques are there at holy places. When I visited the place at Mathura, I witnessed the wall. When we look at the wall, we feel like we are still slaves," he said.

"While visiting Kashi, there is also a structure of slavery. Dream of Hindus is fulfilled in Ayodhya. One day, it will be fulfilled in Mathura and Kashi. Mathura Sri Krishna and Kashi Vishwanath will be freed and temple will be built," Eshwarappa added.

The Places of Worship Act, enacted in 1991, says that religious character of a place of worship existing on the August 15, 1947 shall continue to be the same as it existed on that day. The Act kept Ayodhya case out of its purview.

Mangaluru, Jul 3: Four central crime branch (CCB) police personnel tested positive for coronavirus on Friday in Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka.

So far, eighteen police personnel, including an official of the ACP rank and 12 from Ullal police station, have tested positive for Covid-19 in the district in the last few days, police sources said.

A policeman from Mangaluru Rural station and another from Puttur station have also been infected.

All the personnel who tested positive have been admitted to the designated Covid-19 hospitals.

City police commissioner Vikash Kumar Vikash said adequate protection has been provided to police personnel who were fighting the pandemic and the members of their families.

As of Thursday, the total coronavirus cases in the district stood at 923 and the toll 18 while the state's infection count has crossed the 18,000 mark with 272 deaths.

Mangaluru, May 28: As many as 19 labourers, who were stranded in Lakshadweep island due to lockdown following COVID-19 outbreak, have been brought back to Mangaluru by a boat ' Amindivi' on Thursday.

On their arrival, they were subjected to medical examination and were warmly welcomed by their family members who had come to receive them at the Port.
