CPI (M) takes out rally against UPA policies

Mangalore, September 18: The members of the District Committee of Communist Party of India (Marxism), took out a rally in the city on Tuesday to oppose what they call anti-people policies of UPA government.

Flagging off the rally B Madhava, District Secretary, said that the diesel price hike would result in increase of prices of various other commodities putting extra burden on farmers.

“Policies of the Central government such as allowing 51 per cent FDI in retail sector, increasing the price of diesel by Rs 5 per litre and limiting LPG gas cylinders at subsidised rates to six in a year severely affect the life of common man,” he said.

He also alleged that opening up the multi-brand retail sector to foreign companies would pose a serious threat to the livelihood to crores of traders and their families, along with putting a burden on the consumers.

Sunil Kumar Bajal, city secretary of CPI (M), Krishnappa Konchady and Vasant Achari, CPI (M) leaders, Jayanthi Shetty and Dayanand Shetty, participated in the rally, which culminated at the city's service bus-stand.

Mangaluru, Feb 13: A college student was killed when a bullet tanker knocked his motorbike down near Nanthoor Circle in the city today. 

The deceased has been identified as Karthik Malya, a resident of Mannegudda. He was a final year degree student of Besant College in the city. 

The incident took place when Karthik was from Suratkal to Mangaluru. The bullet tanker reportedly hit the two-wheeler from behind and ran over him. He died on the spot.

Bengaluru, Jul 5: Archbishop Emeritus of Bangalore Bernard Moras has been diagnosed with mild symptoms of Covid-19 and his condition now is said to be stable.

"Most Reverend Bernard Moras, Archbishop Emeritus of Bangalore, had gone to St. John's Medical College for a routine check-up on July 2 as he was not well. Yesterday (July 3), it was confirmed that he has mild symptoms of Covid-19 and the doctors have stated that his condition at present is stable," Archbishop of Bangalore Peter Machado said in a message.

"We assure our beloved Archbishop Emeritus of the prayers of all the faithful in the Archdiocese and wish him a speedy recovery, he said.

The Archbishop Emeritus is aged about 78.

Mangaluru, May 4: An engineering student has claimed to have received 600 threat calls in the past few days from unidentified people for starting fish business during the lockdown in Kavoor. 

According to Sakshath Shetty, resident of Kavoor, he started receiving threat calls from various people after he started selling fish during the lockdown. 

Police said they have been able to identify some of the numbers from where the threat calls were made and investigation is under way.
