Mangalore's new Police Comissioner takes charge; Says public confidence a priority

Mangalore, September 19: Making sure that the people of Mangalore will live in full confidence on the police force will be one of his top priorities, Manish Kharbikar, the new Police Commissioner of Mangalore, said.


Mr. Kharbikar took charge at the Police Commissioner's office in the city on Wednesday after being welcomed by Pratap Reddy, IGP (Western Range). A guard of honour was also given to him upon his arrival.


Speaking to media perons later, Mr. Kharbikar said that he looked forward to maintaining law and order in the city. “Priority is only policing. It touches all walks of life. Cities are areas with greater concentration of people and hence maintaining law and order is a responsibility that we have. People must follow the law and have confidence in the police”, he said.


Responding to the challenges that the coastal region have for him, Mr. Kharbikar said that he is new to the place but will work as per the police proceedures and the constitution. “It will take time for me to get familiarized with this place. But irrespective of where you work, it is according to the law, the Indian Constitution, and police procedure that we are supposed to work and I will do just that. I will hold discussions with officers here and chalk out my plans to go about my work in the days to come”, he said.


Seemingly giving an indication that he is a cricket enthusiast, Mr. Kharbikar said that he hailed from Rajesh Chauhan's Chhatisgarh and not M S Dhoni's Jharkhand. The 39 year old officer is an Engineering graduate and even worked with BHEL as an engineer for two years. He belongs to the 1998 batch of IPS officers and served as ASP in Bellary for probation. He has served in areas of Gadag, Gulbarga, Mandya in the past and also worked as an ADC at Raj Bhavan. He was also selected to serve in the UN Mission in Sudan. He was the DIG (civil rights enforcement), Bangalore, before taking charge here.

Bengaluru, July 29: The Central Crime Branch arrested four international drug peddlers belonging to Kerala and recovered drugs worth Rs 1.25 crore from them, said Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday.

"We have started a war on drugs. Our agenda is to curb the drug mafia not only in Bengaluru, but in entire Karnataka. Many people are involved in the drug mafia. They are targeting students, other states, and international students who can spend and afford to become victims," said Bommai.

The recovered items include 2,000 kg LSD strips, 110 grams MDMA Cristol, 10 ecstasy tablets, 5 kg Ganja, five cell phones, weighing machine and pouches.

"When we raided a house in Soladevanahally police station area, we arrested Shahad Mohammed, Azmal, Ajin KG Verghese and Nitin Mohan. All are from Kerala and we will arrest their contacts as well. They are involved in the dark web mafia," Bommai said.

He said the peddlers were using post offices and couriers for their business.

"I'll speak to the central government, the home ministry and postal department, and other issues related to this mafia. Canada, Netherlands, and other nations are also involved in this mafia," said the state home minister.

"People from influential backgrounds are also involved in this mafia, but our objective is zero tolerance. We are using our intelligence. Drugs are coming from other states like AP, Goa, and other states," he said.
Bommai said he was personally addressing this case and appealed for support from parents, schools and colleges.

"I'm addressing this issue personally because it's important to curb the drug mafia. I need support from schools and college managements and parents. I'll also call college and hostel managements before colleges start. We will make managements responsible," he said.

Mangaluru, Jan 22: Eminent industrialist Dr Mohammed Yusuf has been elected the chairperson of the Karnataka State Board of Auqaf. 

10 members of the Board cast their votes in the election held to the top post today at its office in the city. While Dr Yusuf, who was backed by the Congress, secured six votes, K N M Shafi Sa’adi, who was backed by the BJP, secured only 4 votes.

Addressing reporters, Dr Yusuf said that there was 1.32 lakh acres of Wakf land at the time of Independence. A large number of the properties were lost under various laws, including the Inam Land Abolition Act.

Flanked by Congress MLA Tanveer Sait and Minorities Welfare Dept secretary A B Ibrahim, Dr Yusuf vowed to strive hard to make the Board an example for the entire country. 

74-year-old Dr Yusuf had held the post more than once in the past. A veterinarian, Dr Yusuf had quit the government job and set up business in Bengaluru and Dubai decades ago and has earned considerable success.

Bengaluru, May 26: The Karnataka high court has rejected bail to a software engineer who was arrested after his sarcastic Facebook post urged people to spread coronavirus by sneezing in public over two months ago.

Mujeeb Mohammed was sacked by Infosys from the post of senior software engineer after his arrest on March 29.

Justice KS Mudagal observed the investigating officer's report and the case diary prima facie show though Mujeeb was well educated and employed, he uploaded messages which are likely to cause disharmony and panic, and are hostile to humanity at a time when the world is facing the pandemic.

The judge noted that the records indicate Mujeeb has six bank accounts, stayed in Bahrain and Kuwait for some years, was influenced by religious fanatics and anti-national ideas and that he had shared a Pakistan WhatsApp number to someone over information about Islam. The National Investigation Agency is probing his links.

Mujeeb, who is in judicial custody now, has been booked under sections 153A, 505, 270 and 109 of IPC.

His counsel submitted the maximum punishment under 153 A of IPC (causing enmity) would be three years and for other offences, it's even less. He also stated the petitioner would abide by the conditions to be imposed by the court.

However, the government pleader said probe provided leads on the petitioner's links with unorganised terrorist groups and it has to be investigated further.
