Protests mark Bharat bundh in Mangalore

Mangalore, September 20: Series of protests and demonstrations against United Progressive Alliance government marked the Bharat bundh in the coastal city of Mangalore on Thursday.

The day long strike was called by the National Democratic Alliance and other opposition parties to protest against the recent hike in diesel price, cap on supply of subsidised cooking gas cylinders and for allowing foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail sector by the UPA government.

Activists of local units of Bharatiya Janata Party, Communist Party of India (Marxists) and Janata Dal (Secular) staged separate protests in Mangalore.

Dozens of BJP workers staged a protest near PVS circle in the city and raised slogans against Congress-led union government.

Speaking on the occasion Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said that people had come out in large numbers to support the shutdown. "The BJP has called for shutdown to raise the voice against the insensitive union government on behalf of people, and the people have extended their support," he said.

"We are protesting against anti-national and anti-people policies of Congress-led government and we have come out in support of the people. Because of the wrong policies of the government, the prices of petrol are touching the sky and are being raised frequently. We demand a rollback of petrol prices" he said.

In a separate protest staged in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner in Mangalore, CPI (M) and DYFI activists lashed out at the Centre, which according to them is a puppet controlled by colonial powers.

Raising slogans against FDI in retail, a group of JD(S) workers held a demonstration outside the office of Deputy Commissioner, where M G Hegde, State Secretary of the party, slammed the Congress for being indifferent to the problems of the people.

It is worth mentioning here that this is the third time that the BJP and Left parties are coordinating their agitations since the last Lok Sabha elections to give the impression of a wider opposition unity on issues concerning people. Similar agitations against petrol price hike had happened on July 5, 2010 and May 31, 2012.

BYS hints at inducting 16 MLAs into Karnataka Cabinet

Haveri, Jan 16: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Wednesday hinted at inducting 16 MLAs into the Cabinet which was due for expansion despite the fact that it was a difficult task.

Participating in a function of Choudayya Community here, he further said one should understand the difficulty faced to undertake cabinet expansion in the prevailing situation and whoever gives suggestion should understand the circumstances otherwise the statements would lead to confusion among the community and people of the state.

He stated that 'as many as 17 MLAs resigned to make me Chief Minister and now their community people want their leader to become Minister, it is very difficult to satisfy all of them'.

Karnataka govt mulls ban on cow slaughter, beef consumption

Bengaluru, Jul 11: The Bharatiya Janata Party led government of Karnataka is planning to ban cow slaughter as well as the sale and consumption of beef in the state by bringing Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Preservation Bill, 2012.

"Many states have passed the Anti-Cow Slaughter Bill. We are preparing to implement it in Karnataka as well. The state government will soon implement a ban on cow slaughter, sale and consumption of beef on the lines of many other states," said Prabhu Chauhan, the state's Animal Husbandry Minister.

The Anti-Cow Slaughter Act is already in place in several states like Gujarat, Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh among others.

Last month, the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government passed a draft ordinance to prevent cow slaughter, providing maximum rigorous imprisonment of 10 years and a fine up to Rs 5 lakh.
The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Cow Slaughter Prevention (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020 aims at making the existing Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1955 more effective towards cow safety.

In Karnataka, the BJP-led government had promised to ban cow slaughter in its manifesto for 2018 state assembly election.

"The government will form a team of experts to look into once the current pandemic situation eases," Chauhan stated, adding that if necessary, the team of experts will visit states like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat.

The then BS Yediyurappa-led BJP government had passed the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Protection Bill in 2010 but it failed to get presidential approval. Three years later, the Bill was withdrawn by the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government.

"I will discuss this matter with Chief Minister and if this pandemic situation eases, by next session, if not by upcoming assembly session, we will try to bring Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill," Chauhan added.

Nirmala Sitaraman Udupi’s tradition as rich heritage of spirituality

Udupi, Jan 19: Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitaraman has said the mutt tradition in Udupi is a unique tradition and a perfect example of the country’s rich heritage of spirituality.

Speaking at the Darbar organised for the incoming Paryaya Admar Mutt seer Sri Eeshapriya Theertha Swamiji at Rajangana, here Saturday night, she said, “Paryaya festival is not just an event. It represents the presence of the Lord. I am conscious about the history. I am immensely blessed to be associated with the Krishna Mutt in one or the other.”

She turned nostalgic and traced her connection with the Krishna mutt which started in her childhood. “I am attached to the Mutt and temple due to my maternal uncle. My uncle was a bank employee and he spent his career in Manipal. I am being drawn to the mutt for the past 25 years. I am blessed immensely by the seers of the mutt and Lord Krishna.”
