NIA official reviews probe into fake currency racket

Kasaragod, September 20: A senior National Investigation Agency (NIA) official has visited Kanhangad to review the progress of investigation into a fake currency racket.

NIA Deputy Superintendent of Police Abdul Kareem visited Kanhangad to review the progress of the investigation, Kanhangad Circle Inspector of Police K.V. Venugopal said.

The police in Kanhangad arrested Abdul Jabbar of Kaithakkad, near Cheruvathur, on August 18 after he purchased gold ornaments for Rs.1.80 lakh from a leading jewellery outlet in the town and made the payment using fake notes.

He confessed to circulating counterfeit notes to the tune of Rs.6 lakh by purchasing expensive household items from showrooms in Kannur and Kasaragod districts.

Following his interrogation, the police, on August 27, arrested Abdul Nazeer, 42, a local businessman, for possessing counterfeit currency to the tune of Rs.24 lakh. He had obtained the fake notes from conduits based in Karnataka.

He was found to have burnt fake notes to the tune of Rs.7 lakh on coming to know that the police had intensified the probe into the case.

Though the case had not been formally handed over to the NIA, the local police faced constraints in investigation as the counterfeit currency had come to India via Dubai, Mr. Venugopal said.

Bengaluru, Jul 30: Karnataka reported 83 deaths and 6,128 new cases in the state on Thursday. With this, the total number of cases in the state stood at 1,18,632, the state health ministry said.

Currently, there are 69,700 active cases, while a total of 2,230 people have lost their lives due to the pandemic till now.

There are 15,83,792 confirmed cases across the country. Of them, 5,28,242 cases remain active. While 10,20,582 have recovered, 34,968 patients have lost their lives due to the pandemic.

Jan 31: A bunch of fishermen in Kerala is being praised for releasing an endangered shark back into water. A video posted on Twitter shows the fishermen releasing the whale shark that was trapped in their nets back into the sea.

The video was posted on Twitter by InSeason Fish - a group working towards environmental conservation, sustainable fisheries and healthy oceans. Filmed in Kerala's Kozhikode, it shows fishermen on a fishing vessel with the huge whale shark.

Whale sharks are the largest fish in the ocean and can reach up to 40 feet in length. Distinguished by their white spots, this shark is on International Union for Conservation of Nature's list of endangered species.

In the video, at least seven fishermen are seen working together to lift the thrashing whale shark up with the help of ropes and releasing it into the water.

Bandipur, Jan 28: British adventurer Bear Grylls and superstar Rajinikanth arrived at the Bandipur Tiger Reserve and National Park in Karnataka on Tuesday for shooting a special episode of the show 'Man vs Wild'.

The actor arrived at the location dressed in comfortable sporty clothes. Donning a dark blue jacket and grey track pants, Rajinikanth was also carrying a cross-body sling bag.

Videos and photographs of Rajinikanth arriving at a helipad were shared widely on social media.

Reports say that an agreement was signed between the Karnataka Forest Department represented by the Field Director of Bandipur and Banijay Group, Seventaurus Entertainment Studio Private Ltd, Mumbai for shooting of the documentary in December 2019. The team was also allowed to do a recce from December 27th to 29th as per the agreement, a report said.

The shooting has been permitted for six hours. "Permission for the shooting has been given for Sultan Batteri highway and ranges of Mulleholle, Maddur and Kalkere ranges. They will be shooting in non-tourist zones. If permission was given for the shooting of Wild Karnataka, then this can also be permitted. Also, no tourist or regular forest patrolling activities will be affected. The shooting will be done under special forest protection and no one will be aware of the locations," a forest official was quoted as saying in another news report.

Earlier in 2019, Grylls shot an episode of the show with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Grylls is also back with the latest edition of his National Geographic show ‘Running Wild With Bear Grylls’, where actors such as Channing Tatum, Brie Larson, Joel McHale, Cara Delevingne, Rob Riggle, Armie Hammer and Dave Bautista take on adventurous challenges in remote wilderness.
