FDI in retail leads to development: Janardhan Poojary

Mangalore, September 21: Coming down heavily on National Democratic Alliance and other opposition parties for day-long nationwide strike, former union minister Janardhan Poojary said that there had been a loss of over Rs 1,500 crore due to Thursday's bundh.

 

“Now, they only have to pay back the losses according to the Supreme Court rule," he said.

 

"Introducing FDI in retail sector will lead to development. There is a wrong notion that farmers will suffer. In a matter of fact, they will gain a lot as they can sell their produce at a higher price. With FDI, roads, transport, storage facilities can be developed. In case some states do not want to implement FDI in retail sector, let it not do so. Why is it stopping other states who want to implement this rule as they are really concerned about development," he questioned.

 

He also pointed out that the prices on petrol and diesel can be got down by the State Government by slashing the taxes on these oils.

 

However, the State government is not ready to take this step and is forcing Central government to take the burden, even though price rise it is inevitable as it depends on the global market, he regretted.

 

"Why will UPA government intend to make people suffer. They know that people will not trust them and won't elect them if they do so in future elections. The opposition cannot stand development," he said.

Bengaluru, Jan 24: The JD(S) is looking to leverage anti-Citizen (Amendment) Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR) sentiment sweeping the country to revive itself and will hold protests in Bengaluru and New Delhi.

The Bengaluru protest is scheduled for Friday. At a meeting of party workers in Bengaluru on Thursday, party patriarch HD Deve Gowda and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy urged the rank and file to participate in the rally to send out a loud and clear message to the BJP.

"The BJP has set out to make Muslims second-grade citizens. India has 40 crore Muslims, can these communal forces eliminate them all?" Gowda said in his address. "We should have the guts to launch a massive protest at Jantar Mantar. We should be prepared to go to jail in the fight against [Prime Minister] Narendra Modi and [Union home minister] Amit Shah."

Gowda said he will lead the rally in Delhi and urged secular parties to unite to take on the BJP. "It is important that regional parties, which share a secular ideology, unite on a common agenda and fight the BJP. Bihar, Kerala and Odisha have said they will not implement CAA. The sentiment is likely to spread to other states," Gowda said.

Kumaraswamy said not only Muslims but many other communities will also bear the brunt of BJP’s "divisive politics". "This pair of Hakka-Bukka [Modi and Shah] is not targeting Muslims alone," he said. "For them, all communities other than upper caste Hindus are inferior Shudras. They will treat even Lingayats, Vokkaligas and Dalits with the same contempt."

The former CM made a special appeal to Lingayats, who generally back the BJP, to stop supporting the saffron party’s caste-oriented politics. "You had appreciated my farm loan waiver scheme and promised support in the elections. But, the results were contrary to that," he said.

The JD(S) passed three resolutions including one to condemn the Centre for enacting CAA. The others were to protest against the Centre’s indifference to the floods in the state and the failed economic policy of the Centre.

Bengaluru, Aug 6: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Wednesday asked the state chief secretary to take necessary steps in view of the rising rainfall in the state and gave instructions for releasing Rs 50 crore for emergencies.

"CM BS Yediyurappa has instructed Chief Secretary to take appropriate precautions in view of the rise in rainfall activity across the state. CM advised Chief Secretary to keep in touch with district officials and instructed to release Rs 50 crores for emergencies," an official release said.

India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in a number of districts in the state.

CS Patil, Director, India Meteorological Department (IMD) Bengaluru said that red alert has been announced in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Chickamagalur, Shivamogga, Kodagu and Hassan due to heavy rainfall in the region from last two-three days.

Manglauru, July 30: There will be no congregational prayer on Eid Al-Adha at the historic Eidgah mosque in Mangluru’s lighthouse hill this year due to covid-19 pandemic. 

The decision to suspend the Eid prayers in Eidgah was taken as per the guidelines issued by the State Board of Auqaf, said Haji Y Abdullah Kunhi, president of Zeenat Baksh Central Juma Masjid and Eidgah Masjid.

However, Eid prayer will be held at Zeenat Baksh Central Juma Masjid on July 31 at 7 a.m.

Muslims in coastal Karnataka will be celebrating Eid al-Adha on July 31 whereas Muslims in other parts of Karnataka and India are celebrating the festival on August 1.
