Savings prevented India from global recession'

Mangalore, September 21: Indians were able to overcome global economic recession due to their savings said Rajya Sabha MP and Chairman of Parliament Standing Committee for Human Resources Oscar Fernandes.

He was speaking after distributing uniforms to the members of Self-Help Groups organised by Navodaya Grama Vikasa Charitable Trust on Friday at Loyola Hall here.

“Self-Help Groups (SHGs) play a crucial role in empowering women. These Groups were succeeded in developing personality of women and also instilling leadership qualities in them” he said.

He said “late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi believed women folks can be empowered through Panchayathraj system. Thus, 33 per cent reservation was given. Now it is 50 per cent.” Women also repay the loans taken from banks promptly, he said.

He also appreciated the efforts of SHGs for implementing Right to Education Act.

Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel also spoke. Navodaya Grama Vikasa Charitable Trust Managing Trustee and SCDCC Bank Chairman M N Rjaendra Kumar presided over the function.

Earlier, five women hailing from different community and members of SHGs inaugurated the programme. The uniforms were distributed to 12 women SHGs and four men SHGs.

Entrepreneur Rohan Monteiro, Directors of SCDCC Bank and others were present.

Mangaluru, Feb 10: Life of a 40–year-old man, who suffered a massive cardiac arrest, was saved by an ambulance driver who covered 80-km distance between Dharmasthala and Mangaluru in just 40 minutes.

The patient, a Chikkaballapur native sustained a heart attack near Sakleshpur on Saturday while he was on his way to Dharmasthala. He was provided preliminary treatment at a private hospital in Ujire, where doctors advised his relatives to shift him to a hospital in Mangaluru immediately.

The patient’s condition was critical and the odds were completely against him. Moreover owing to the ongoing double lane project work, the road too had been dugout. Despite all this, ambulance driver Hameed drove at a fast pace and managed to take the patient to the hospital within 40 minutes.

Mangaluru, July 21: Putting an end to all speculations, district in charge minister Kota Srinvas Poojary on Tuesday said that the lockdown in Dakshina Kannada will not be extended beyond Wednesday.

In a video message, the minister said that all the shops in the district will remain open from July 23 morning. He said district administration will make a formal announcement soon.  

Meanwhile chief minister B S Yediyurappa said: “There’ll be no lockdown from Wednesday, people need to get back to work, economy is also very important. We have to fight COVID-19 while maintaining stable economy. Lockdown is not the solution, now restrictions will be placed only in containment zones.”

Bagalkot, April 4: A COVID-19 positive patient passed away in Karnataka's Bagalkot on Friday, taking the total number of deaths in the state to four, informed the Deputy Commissioner of Bagalkot.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 2650 including 184 people who have been discharged or cured or migrated, and 68 deaths, as per the data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
