Udupi, September 23: Union Minister for Energy and Corporate Affairs Dr M Veerappa Moily alleged ruling BJP in Karnataka of practicing caste line politics.

Speaking at the the District Congress Committee meeting held at party office here on Sunday evening he said that Congress leaders like Nijalingappa, Kanti, Veerendra Patil from Lingayath community had served as the chief ministers in Karnataka. But not by someone else' mercy but by merit. Likewise, SM Krishna, Kengal Hanumathappa from Okkaliga community, myself (Moily), Bangarappa and others from backward classes also became the chief ministers on merit, he said.

“However, in BJP B S Yeddyurappa ended up in jail and D V Sadanada Gowda who was chosen for being a Okkaliga was shown the doors”, he said.

Speaking to media persons Mr Moily said, BJP's opposition to recent reforms, including allowing FDI in retail sector, by the UPA is the total reflection financial illiteracy.

“The reforms were not introduced keeping the elections in mind. This is as part of UPA's country first policy. Cap on subsidized LPG, allowing FDI in multi brand retail sector etc. have been introduced to give boost to country's economy. In the NDA regime, then Finance Minister Yashwanth Sinha hypothecated India's gold reserve to Bank Of England and borrowed loan”, he said.

Asked for how long the BJP will continue in power in Karnataka, the Congress leader replied: “Since the day Mr Yeddyurappa became the chief minister, since the day he quit the post, since DVS became the CM and again since the day Jagadish Shettar became the CM there has been an anarchy in State administration. Even after DVS and Shettar took charge the corrupt Ministers continued to be in power and thus the even after ousting Yeddyurappa BJP failed to prove that it was a reformed party”.

Replying another question Mr Moily ruled out a change in the KPCC leadership. He said, “Congress goes by secular principles. There is no question of selecting a leader for the party on caste lines”.

Bengaluru, Feb 2: The monthlong budget session beginning on Monday, which will mark BS Yediyurappa’s maiden budget in his fourth term as chief minister, is expected to be a fiery one.

The opposition JD(S) and Congress have already threatened to stall proceeding until BJP legislator Basangouda Patil Yatnal apologises for his controversial remarks against freedom fighter and centenarian HS Doreswamy. Yatnal had called him a fake and a Pakistani agent.

Disruptions are also likely to pose a threat to speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri’s novel idea of having a two-day discussion on the Constitution of India to commemorate 70 years of the country’s Independence.

Both opposition parties have scheduled legislature party meetings early on Monday and they could coordinate on issues on the floor of the house to put the BJP — especially Yediyurappa — on the backfoot.

Yatnal is not known as a “hardliner”, but his attack on Doreswamy has garnered support from several ministers including CT Ravi, KS Eshwarappa and V Somanna. Yediyurappa may have a hard time defending his party’s line.

The BJP is yet to schedule its legislature party meeting, but MLAs suggest the party will allow the issue to be raised and debated in the legislature. “Both have expressed their point of view. Let there be a discussion on the matter, but not allowing the house to function will only be a waste of the state’s time and money,” said deputy chief minister CN Ashwath Narayan.

Besides the Doreswamy issue, Yediyurappa will also deliver his reply — postponed from February 20 — to the debate on the governor’s address. The issue of student Amulya Leona Narona’s arrest on a charge of sedition, the Bidar sedition case involving a parent of a school student, pro-Pakistan writings on walls in places in north Karnataka, introduction of NPR and the anti-CAA stir is also likely to feature during the lengthy session.

Bengaluru, May 16: Health Minister B Sriramulu has sought the aid of Home department for curbing sex work in certain parts of the state - which continues unabated despite lockdown.

“It poses health risks to those involved. I request the department to ensure that the business is prohibited at such a time of crisis,” he stated in a letter to Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai.

At the same time, in order to ensure the safety of these workers, Sriramulu has asked both the Health department and the Karnataka State AIDS Prevention Society (KSAPS) to come up with a detailed report on rehabilitation of sex workers and transgenders.

The Health minister’s order was prompted by a letter by writer and activist Roopa Hassan. The writer, who was earlier member of a panel (led by actor-turned-politician Jayamala) on the study of issues faced by sex workers, had sought government’s intervention to stop condom distribution to registered sex workers and transgenders, as continuing work during pandemic was posing health risks to the community.
