Weaker sections in India live in fear and insecurity'

Mangalore, September 25: Weaker sections of the society lived in fear and insecurity in India, as women, children and people of backward classes were always subjected to atrocities, said Alva's Educational Foundation chairman Dr M Mohan Alva.

 

Inaugurating the 'Samprathi 2012', a two-day national seminar on 'Human Rights Advocacy – An Avenue for Social Change', organised by Department of Social Work of St Aloysius College, in the city on Tuesday, he said that even those suffering from HIV/AIDS and leprosy are seen as pariahs in this society. Such atrocities and indiscrimination needs to be stopped, he said.

 

He said that awareness has to be created among individuals so that human beings could avail their rights such as right to life, health, education, food and constitutional rights. It is the duty of each individual to bring about equality in the society, he said.

 

Mr Alva lamented that even after 65 years of Independence, there were two very conflicting faces of India. On one side there are the affluent, while others lived in poverty, without a roof or a single proper meal per day.  The country has renowned scholars, while there are still those who did not have access to education, he said.

 

Urging people to work for the betterment of the society, he said, “We can bring a change in the society only if we make up our minds and work towards it. “Our struggle should be born out of passion, not out of burden. People should struggle to free our nation from this injustice and inequality”, he said.

 

Vice principal of St Aloysius College Fr Francis D'Almeida said that we needed to emphasise on human rights, not because they were inscribed in the UN Human Rights Declaration, but because they were basic to human beings.

 

In his presidential address, Rector of St Aloysius Institutions Fr Joseph Rodrigues said that it would be wrong to say that states granted rights to its citizens. They merely give in to their people's assertions and demands, he said.

 

Head of Department of Social Work Dr Loveena Lobo made the introductory remarks. Convenor of the seminar Roshan Monteiro welcomed the gathering. Student representative of MSW Linal David proposed a vote of thanks.

Bengaluru, Jan 25: The local police will provide security for Sri Nijagunananda Swami and his Kittur Nishkal Mantapa Mutt following a letter containing a threat to his life that was received on Friday.

The letter, containing the names of 15 liberal thinkers and activists, was circulated widely on social media and shown on some Kannada TV channels. The letter is addressed to the seer, and it condemns his lectures where he speaks in favour of liberal values.

“The decision to eliminate you will be taken on January 21. You will be eliminated, along with 15 of your followers and people who think like you,” the letter said. 

Among those threatened are Nidumamidi Channammalla Swami, Jnyana Prakash Swami, the former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, actors Prakash Raj and Chetan Kumar, writer Chandrashekar Patil, Brinda Karat of the CPI(M) and writer K.S. Bhagavan.

It is not the first time that the seer is getting such threats. Two years ago, Belagavi Police had provided security to the seer following threats to his life. Last year, he got a phone call from a person from Shivamogga district. But the seer did not bother to complain.

This time, the district police will seek a written complaint from the seer. “We will assess the threat perception and the security levels. Adequate security will be provided,” the police said.

The seer is now camping in Jewargi in Kalaburagi district. “We have intimated the Kalaburagi Superintendent of Police of the need for immediate security arrangements. We will take steps to provide adequate security to him once he arrives in Belagavi district,” Superintendent of Police Lakshman Nimbaragi said.

New Delhi, Mar 19: The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the validity of Karnataka's 2018 reservation law, which granted reservation in promotion to employees belonging to SC and ST categories.

A bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud holds that applications filed by a group of general category employees for applying 'post-based quota' and the principle of the creamy layer at entry-level in public employment are not maintainable.

The apex court had, in November last year, reserved its order on the applications filed by general category candidates in the matter.

In May last year, the top court had upheld the law allowing reservations in promotions for SC and ST candidates with consequential seniority.

Mandya, July 30: BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel on Wednesday said Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has done a commendable job in tackling the Covid-19 situation and floods and that the question of changing the leadership does not arise.

Karnataka on Wednesday reported 5,503 new cases of Covid-19 and 92 related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 1,12,504 and the death toll to 2,147.

Speaking to reporters here, Kateel said, "Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi has gone to Delhi to discuss the projects sanctioned to state with the central minister. There is no need to read too much into it."

Replying to a query on graft charges against the BSY government by the Congress, Kateel said, "Congress national president, state unit president are out on bail in graft cases . Why did a Congress leader who calls himself a bande (rock) has approached court seeking stay on CBI probe? Before making any allegations against the government, they should think about 'irregularities' in Indira Canteen and housing schemes," he charged.

Instead of instilling confidence and hope among the people in these testing times, the Congress is unnecessarily creating fear with petty politics, he told reporters in Shravanabelagola, Hassan district.

"The Yediyurappa-led BJP government is working day and night to tackle the Covid-19. Similarly, several non-governmental organisations have joined hands with the government in the fight against the virus. But, the Congress is only creating confusion by issuing baseless statements," Kateel said.
