Swiss foundation to hold malaria awareness drive in Mangalore

 Mangalore, September 26: Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV), a Swiss based foundation, in association with Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Mangalore, Dakshina Kannada District Health Department and Malaria Cell of Mangalore City Corporation, will be organising 'Malaria Prevention Awareness' inter-school art contest for high school students in order to spread awareness on malaria.

 

Speaking at a press meet here on Wednesday, Dr Shantharam B Baliga, HOD of Paediatrics at KMC, said that Mangalore, being a malaria-prone city had to gain awareness on malaria, which was a serious health concern. The best way to spread awareness in the region would be through children by organising a painting event, he said.

 

He said that around 6000 students from 25 schools would partake in the art contest which will be held in a span of one week in October. Out of them, 100 contestants will be selected for the final round. The awareness drive, with the theme 'Declaring War against Malaria', would include photography exhibition, teachers' orientation programme, and Jatha by students, he said.

 

The valedictory ceremony, which will include representatives from MMV, Geneva, will be held on November 2 in Town Hall.

 

The painting event is being coordinated by Centre for Integrated Learning (CIL), a city based NGO.

 

Dr Arun, District Malaria Officer, Nanda Gopal and Sachita Gopal of CIL were present at the press meet.

Bengaluru, Jun 5: An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 on the Richter Scale jolted Karnataka on Friday morning while another with a magnitude of 4.7 was felt in Jharkhand.

The tremors were felt in Hampi (Karnataka) and Jamshedpur (Jharkhand), according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

According to NCS, the aftershocks were felt at 6:55 am in both the places today.

Mangaluru, May 5: The principal of St Agnes College, Mangaluru, Sr Dr Jeswina AC attained superannuation after 28 years of dedicated and fruitful service.

Sister Dr Venissa AC, the associate professor of the department of Economics, has been appointed by the Apostolic Carmel Educational Society Management as the principal of the college. Sister Roopa Rodrigues AC. has been appointed as the vice principal.

Sr Dr Venissa AC was earlier serving as the vice principal at St Agnes College.

The college and the management has thanked Sr Dr Jeswina AC for the dedicated services she has rendered to the college.

Mangaluru, Apr 1: The rush for purchase of essential commodities has eased in several places in Dakshina Kannada with the relaxation of lockdown from Wednesday between 7 am and 12 noon by the district administration. However, a few markets in Mangaluru still had queues in front of vegetable shops on Wednesday.

Vegetable shops and markets in Mallikatte, Kadri, Bejai-Kapikad, Urwastore, Mannagudda and Carstreet areas were crowded with people violating social distancing norms due to the coronavirus crisis.

To avoid swelling of crowds at Central Market in Mangaluru, the market was opened only for wholesalers to collect vegetables. The entry of public to Central Market was prohibited.

MCC Commissioner Ajith Kumar Hegde Shanady said that retail sale is prohibited at Central Market.

The Surathkal market too has been closed from April and traders from the market are allowed to sell essential commodities at alternative locations from 7 am to 12 noon.
