Akthar_husainMangalore, September 28: This photograph taken by Akhter Husain, Head of the department of Orthodontics, Yenepoya University, has won the silver award in the recently held 6th Better Photography Magazine Photograph of the Year Award for 2012.” If you mistook it for a painting, that is a compliment for Dr. Akhter.

Dr. Akhter, who has been passionate about photography and paintings for about 30 years now, has also won three bronze awards in this competition. His photographs showing Kambala, a destitute woman, an old man (titled Trenchant Eye) won the bronze awards.

An ARPS (winner of associateship of Royal Photographic Society in recognition of “high standard of technical competence and individual creative ability”), Dr. Akhter, said he chanced upon the rocks in the waters near a waterfalls in the surroundings of Hebri in Udupi district. By rearranging the rocks imaginatively, he got the image of a man's face which he has titled “The look.” Is he bespectacled? You decide.

The photograph, which bagged 81 out of 100 points in the competition, is Dr. Akhter's favourite too. “It is from the nature, has sober colours, modern, and abstract,” he explained. It had won an international award in Paris earlier, he added.

Dr. Akhter, for whom photography was a craze when he was in primary school much to the disliking of his father, has dabbled in paintings too. But his responsibilities as faculty of the university and his doctoral studies hardly provide a chance for him to pursue his interest in this form of art. He however wants to open a gallery for all visual artists possibly in the City Centre mall, though his previous attempt at it were not successful.

But he gets ample opportunities to click the camera. In the last three months he has visited four countries including the US and Japan, where he lived out his passion to the fullest. When in town, he would be out with the camera on weekends. He has a huge collection of photographs and about a dozen national, international awards. He plans to hold a one-man exhibition of photographs in the city soon on Kambala. He has plenty of images of bhootadakola – the annual ritual for spirit shrines.

Bengaluru, Feb 19: Karnataka Forest Minister Anand Singh on Wednesday said that there was no criminal case filed directly against him.

When asked about PIL filed in the Karnataka High Court against him, Singh told media: "Some lawyer has filed a PIL against me in the High Court. I cannot stop anyone from filing the PIL."

"I have given my criminal record. There is no criminal case directly filed against me. My name is there in some cases but in 'others category'. We will see what happens," he said.

When asked about Congress leader Siddaramaiah's comments criticising him for being given the forest portfolio, Singh said: "I cannot comment on what he said against me as he is a former chief minister and very senior leader."

"Also the opposition always tries to make allegations against me. That is why he criticised me," he said.

Leader of Opposition in Karnataka Assembly Siddaramaiah on Monday demanded that Forest Minister Anand Singh should either be expelled from the ministry or assigned a different portfolio.

A number of cases are pending against Singh including those registered under the Karnataka Forest Act.

Mangaluru, Feb 18: Within days after Kambala racer Srinivasa Gowda emerged a national hero, another Kambala racer Nishant Shetty has grabbed headlines.

Nishant Shetty from Bajagoli Jogibettu reportedly broke Gowda’s record at the Venoor Kambala on Sunday. Shetty recorded 143m in 13.68 seconds. If calculated for 100m he clocks it in 9.51 seconds. His speed is faster than Gowda who clocked 9.55 seconds.

According to Kambala organisers, with Shetty’s feat, four participants have joined the elite club of racers who have completed the 100 metres in less than ten seconds.

They are Iruvathur Anand (9.57 secs), Akkeri Suresh Shetty (9.57 secs), Srinivas Gowda (9.55 secs) and Nishant Shetty (9.51 secs). Anand and Suresh Shetty had participated in the same Venoor Kambala where Nishant emerged first.

Kambala is an annual race held in Karnataka where people sprint 143m through paddy fields with the buffaloes. During the race, the racers try to bring the buffaloes under control by holding their reins tight and beating them, making it amply clear that the animal plays an equally important role in achieving the timing. Traditionally, it is sponsored by local Tuluva landlords and households in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.
