First batch of Hajj pilgrims departs from Mangalore

Mangalore, September 28: The first batch of pilgrims from the state left for the sacred Hajj pilgrimage from Mangalore Airport on Friday.

The first batch of pilgrims consisted of 220 Hajis today of the total 1,035 pilgrims from Mangalore to travel to the holy city of Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia. Relatives and friends of the pilgrims came in large numbers to see off their dear ones depart for the journey.

S K Belubbi, State Hajj Minister, flagged off the bus from the old airport terminal carrying the first batch of pilgrims to the new terminal from where they boarded the flight.

Speaking to media persons on the occasion, Mr. Bellubbi said that a total of 6,800 people from Karnataka are undertaking the Hajj pilgrimage this year and today's batch of pilgrims that left for the pilgrimage is first in the entire state to depart for holy cities. Arrangements for pilgrims to leave for the holy journey have been made from four destinations i.e. Mangalore, Bangalore, Goa and Hyderabad, he said. Wishing the pilgrims a safe and sound journey, Mr.Bellubbi prayed to the Almighty to solve the problem of drought in the state. The minister also said that the Hajj Bhavan in Bangalore will be completed soon and the state government will consider setting up similar Hajj Bhavans in cities like Mangalore phase wise.

R Abdul Riyaz Khan, Chairman, Karanataka State Wakf Board, said that all arrangements have been made for the benefit of the pilgrims and that he is supervising every aspect of the journey being undertaken by them.

Thwaka Ahmed Musliyar, Mangalore Qazi and Ibrahim Musliyar Bekal, Udupi Qazi, carried out duas on the occasion. MLAs UT Khader, Ramanath Rai, and Abhaychandra Jain were present among others.

Mangaluru, May 5: As many as 7,119 labourers, who were stranded in Dakshina Kannada district, were sent to their native places in buses operated by KSRTC’s Mangaluru and Puttur divisions.

After the announcement of lockdown, the stranded labourers were provided shelter in various halls, Town Hall and government hostels in the district.

The stranded labourers from Kuloor, Panjimogaru, Panambur, Baikampady, Yeyyadi, Mulki, Ullal, Bunder, Hoige Bazar and from taluk centres, who wished to take up farming activities in their villages, were sent back in KSRTC and private buses. As many as 266 buses were engaged for ferrying the labourers.

The labourers underwent health check-up prior to their departure to their native villages, Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh said.

Bengaluru, Aug 9: karnataka's Health Minister B Sriramulu has tested positive for the novel coronavirus. He has been hospitalised and is being treated for Covid-19. The minister has also asked all of those who came in contact with him recently to take necessary precautions.

Sriramulu made the announcement in a series of tweets on Sunday. He said, “After symptoms of flu, I have tested positive for coronavirus today.”

“Under the leadership of Honorable Chief Minister (BS Yediyurappa), all the departments of the government, including my department, have been working hard against Covid-19. From the time of corona's appearance, I have had the opportunity to visit 30 districts and work in harmony with the government's desire to treat people well. It is in this backdrop that I am going to be hospitalized and treated,” B Sriramulu said.

Karnataka’s Health Minister also added, “All those who have been in contact with me recently have been requested to take precautionary measures.”

Earlier this month, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa also tested positive for Covid-19. The state's Leader of Opposition and former CM Siddaramaiah of the Congress also declared that his samples too had returned positive for the infection. Both of the leaders are undergoing treatment for Covid-19 at the privately-owned Manipal hospital in Bengaluru.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Karnataka has 79,773 active cases while a total of 89,238 patients have been discharged in the state after recovering from Covid-19 and 3091 have succumbed to it.

Belagavi, Feb 11: Tension prevailed for sometime here after a few villagers spotted four country-made pistols disposed in the garbage site by the road between Markandey Nagar – Waghavade village on Sunday. Police rushed to the spot and seized the arms which are believed to be of Portugal era.

Sources said some villagers noticed a pistol lying along with heaps of refuse. They informed Bhavakanna Patil, the owner of the agricultural field adjacent to the garbage site. Patil and the villagers checked the garbage and found three more pistols totalling four.

Police said the pistols are about 50 to 60 years old. Going by their condition, all rusted, it is believed that they were left unused for a long time. The Belagavi rural police who have filed a suo motu case related to the incident are getting into the skin of case to trace the owners and those who disposed them in the garbage pit. 

According to preliminary investigation, it is learnt that such pistols were in vogue during Portugal rule in Goa. There are chances that those who inherited the arms may have disposed it for the fear of possessing weapon illegally. The chances of some notorious people who reside in the vicinity near Waghavade and surrounding areas, where burglaries and dacoity are frequently reported, disposing the arms due to the fear of police also cannot be ignored. Police Commissioner Lokesh Kumar was not available for comments.
