PFI local unit chief arrested in ABVP activist murder case

Kasargod, October 1: The police have arrested a key accused in the murder of Akhil Bharathiya Vidyarthi Parishad activist Sachin Gopal.

He had been identified as Askar, 24, the Kakkad unit president of the Popular Front of India.

The police retrieved the weapon, a foldable knife, used by the assailant which was abandoned in the Kakkad river after the crime.

The police said Askar stabbed Sachin outside Pallikkunnu Government Higher Secondary School after a clash between activists of the ABVP and the Campus Front of India in the school.

He had gone into hiding at Kuttippuram after the incident. He was arrested by the police at Kakkad here.

The police have so far arrested seven persons in connection with the murder. The police had earlier arrested two unit presidents of the PFI and Campus Front of India activists.

Sachin was stabbed on July 6 and after undergoing treatment at various hospitals, succumbed to injuries at Kasturba Medical College Hospital, Manipal, on September 5.

15 more policemen test COVID-19 positive in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Jul 8: 15 police personnel from Bangalore's Whitefield division tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday.

Out of these, 12 are from the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) police station, sources said.

A total of 27 police staff of the Whitefield division have tested positive so far and five have been discharged. The HAL police station closed on June 27 after one police staff tested COVID positive. All personnel of the police station were tested in the following days and 12 tests returned positive.

Women lead massive protest demanding liquor ban in Karnataka

Bagalkote, Jan 27: The bank of Krishna River in front of Sangamantha Temple at Koodalasangama in Karnataka today witnessed the launch of women’s indefinite strike demanding liquor ban in the state.

Thousands of women from various parts of Karnataka have taken part in the strike being organised under the banner of 'Karnataka Madya Nisheda Andolana'.

The strike was launched to draw the attention of the state government to press for a complete ban on the sale of liquor across the state.

About 50 various organizations and religious pontiffs have extended their support for the strike. Food is being cooked on the bank of the river for the agitating women.

The women from Chikmagalur, Tumakuru, Raichur and Ballari districts are taking part in it.

Udupi's fisherwoman spends her life savings to feed needy amid lockdown

Udupi, Apr 24: While several state governments and NGOs are actively working to provide essentials to the needy amid the COVID-19 lockdown, a fisherwoman in Karnataka's Udupi has proved that even a small gesture of help for others can make a huge difference in the society.
A fisherwoman, Sharadakka, distributed rice to 140 needy families in her neighbourhood during the ongoing lockdown. The contribution was made by spending all her life savings amounting to Rs 30,000. The amount was saved by her over a period of time in an effort to build a house for herself.
On Thursday Udupi Deputy Commissioner G. Jagadeesh visited her and ensured help to build her house.
"Spending her meagre earnings, Sharadakka generously filled many empty stomachs amid the nation-wide lockdown, which is a matter of pride," said the Deputy Commissioner.
