Fishing boat capsizes off Mangalore; five fishermen rescued

Mangalore, October 3: Five fishermen, who were returning from a two-day-long fishing voyage, survived high rising waves after the fishing boat they sailed in, capsized off the South Wharf here.

The ill-fated boat 'New Star' drowned near the mouth of estuary after developing some engine trouble, sources said.

Fortunately, other fishermen, who caught a glimpse of the accident at sea, rescued all the five stranded fishermen on board 'New Star' and brought them to the coast.

According to Rajesh and Latheef, who were running the boat, the tragedy led to a loss of Rs 14 lakh as the boat capsized along with the fish and other materials.

Dakshina Kannada DC office staff sent for quarantine

Mangaluru, Apr 22: A staff working at the office of Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner was sent to quarantine as a precautionary measure here in the city on Wednesday.

The staff reportedly is a distant relative of a woman (native of Bantwal) who recently died due to killer Corona Virus in Wenlock Hospital, prompting the DC office to send the staff for 14-day quarantine.

According to the reports the staff had met the Doctor who was treating the woman and had inquired about her health condition on April 18.

However the staff did not meet the woman when she was in hospital as she was being treated in the ICU.

Udupi: Byndoor police station sealed for 2nd time after 3 staff test covid positive

Byndoor, Jul 16: Byndoor Police Station in Kundapur taluk of Udupi District, has been sealed for the second time in a month, after three personnel including an ASI were tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday.

All the three including a lady Home Guard have been admitted to the designated Covid Hospital.

Last month the Station was sealed after staff had tested positive.

Mangaluru expat Mohammed Kana passes away in Saudi Arabia

Mangaluru, May 15: Mohammed Kana, son of late Ismail Kana and grandson of late Dr M S Bapanad Mulki passed away in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia due to heart attack on Thursday. He was 57.

Hailing from Mangaluru, Mohammed Kana was working in Saudi Arabia for past 30 years. He is survived by his wife, son and a daughter.

He was involved in various social and welfare activities in India and Saudi Arabia. His tragic demise has left huge vacuum in his family and community at large.
