Aligarh, October 3: Renowned Islamic scholar, linguist and litterateur Dr. Abdul Haq Ansari passed away on Wednesday at his residence at Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. He was 81.

 

Though he was suffering from old-age related illness, Dr Ansari was active in Islamic movement until his last breath.

 

Dr. Ansari was considered as one of the greatest Islamic thinkers of modern times. He had been a mentor to the research scholars of Islamic Philosophy in India and played a vital role in the ideological development of the Islamic Movement in the South Asian country. He was very much concerned about academic and moral upliftment of students and youths.

 

Dr. Ansari has more than a dozen books in Urdu and English to his credit. His masterpiece 'Learning the Language of Quran' is considered as one of the best English guides for the beginners of Qur'anic studies.

 

He was the Amir (president) of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), the largest organisation in India for Islamic cause between 2003 and 2007.

 

Dr. Ansari rendered his services as Professor and Head of the Department of Arabic, Persian and Islamic Studies, Vishwa Bharti University, Shantiniketan, West Bengal from 1965 to 1978, then at Department of Islamic Studies, Sudan University from 1978 to 1981, at Dhahran University from 1982 to 1985 and at Imam Muhammad Bin Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from 1985 to 1995.

 

He was also directing research on Religious Traditions, which includes Islam and other religions at the Islamic Academy, formerly Centre for Religious Studies and Guidance, Aligarh, as its Director since 1996.

 

For more than 10 years, he had pursued research in various aspects of Islamic thought at the Centre for Academic Research, Imam Muhammad b. Saud Islamic University, Riyadh.

 

He was also the Chancellor of Jamia Islamia (Islamic university), Shantapuram, Kerala, India.

 

Born on September 1, 1931 at Tamkohi, Deoaria, at Uttar Pradesh, Ansari Studied Arabic, Philosophy and history and obtained his B.A from Aligarh Muslim University, in 1957. He pursued higher studies in philosophy and obtained M.A. (Philosophy) from Aligarh Muslim University in 1959. He did his Ph.D. (Philosophy) from Aligarh Muslim University in 1962. He also obtained a Masters Degree, M.T.S. (Comparative Religion and Theology), from Harvard University in United States of America in 1972.

Bengaluru, Jun 17: The Congress on Wednesday decided to field senior party leader B K Hariprasad and incumbent Naseer Ahmed as candidates for the coming legislative council polls in Karnataka.

"The Congress President Sonia Gandhi has approved the proposal for the candidature of B K Hariprasad and Naseer Ahmed as Congress candidates to contest the biennial elections to the Legislative Council of Karnataka to be elected by the MLAs," the AICC said in a release.

The election is necessitated as the term of seven MLCs- Naseer Ahmed, Jayamma, M C Venugopal, N S Bose Raju, H M Revanna (all Congress), T A Sharavana (JDS) and independent D U Mallikarjuna- will end June 30.

Polling will be held on June 29 to fill seven MLC berths, and June 18 is the last date for filing of nominations.

While the BJP is in a position to win four out of seven seats, the Congress can win two and the JD(S) one.

Twenty-eight valid votes of MLAs are required for each candidate to win.

Hariprasad’s candidature has been announced as his tenure in the Rajya Sabha is coming to end on June 25.

He has also served as general secretary of the party.

Naseer Ahmed, who is retiring as MLC on June 30, will be seeking another term.

According to state Congress president D K Shivakumar, more than 200 aspirants have sought tickets for the two seats that the party can win in the legislative council polls.

Mangaluru, May 24: A youth committed suicide by jumping into River Netravati from the old bridge at Panemangaluru on the outskirts of the city. 

The deceased has been identified as Nishant, son of Chandrahasa Moolya, a resident of Kolakeeru, near Kalladka in Bantwal taluk. 

When Nishant jumped to river, a few Muslim youths - identified as Shameer Goodinabali, Mohammad, Tauseef, Mukhtar, Zahid and Arif - also jumped to river in an apparent bid to rescue him. 

Though they managed to take an unconscious Nishant out of the water, he breathed his last without responding to any treatment. Jurisdictional Bantwal town police visited the spot later.

Meanwhile, a few locals captured the video of Muslim youths' attempt to rescue a Hindu youth on Eid al-Fitr amidst covid-19 lockdown. The video went viral within hours. 

Social media platforms including WhatsApp and Facebook flooded with messages appreciating the courage of Muslim men, who endangered their lives to save a Hindu youth on Eid day.
