Puttur, October 4: At least two people sustained severe injuries after a clash broke out between two groups of Bharatiya Janata Party activists following a dispute over a Hindu cremation site at Kallarpe under Aryapu Gram Panchayat limits in Puttur taluk.

The Gram Panchayat had identified a plot of land to be used as a crematory site, and had appointed a committee to serve the purpose. Though the approval had been granted by the Gram Panchayat eight years ago in 2004, work has not begun at the plot due to the opposition from the local residents, most of them BJP activists.

The brawl erupted when around 10 members of cremation site committee including Keshav, Balakrishna Rai and Balakrishna Shetty arrived at the chosen spot on Tuesday along with a JCB excavator. Angered by their move, local residents along with a few members of Gram Panchayat, Taluk Panchayat began protesting, which resulted in clash between two groups.

Two people, including committee member Keshav, who sustained severe injuries in the clash, were admitted to two different hospitals.

According to Keshav a group of around 10 members including BJP leaders such as Gram Panchayat member Vijay B S, Taluk Panchayat members Shashiprabha and Babith Kumar, not only prevented them from beginning work but also assaulted them.

He told police that assailants also pelted stones at him and as a result he sustained head injuries. “The BJP activists who should have extended their support to the cause of Hindu crematory ground are against us. Panchayat member Vijay has been behaving arrogantly due to his political influence,” he said.

Vijay B S, who has also suffered injuries, said that he and other local residents are against the creation of a cremation ground at the allotted land in Kallarpe. “There are plenty of homes as well as a water tank nearby. We have been objecting the proposal from many years now. But they have decided to carry on the work without any purpose. We have merely been protesting objecting to it, and have not resorted to assaults” he justified.

He stated that the residents would not allow the land to be converted into a cremation ground under any circumstances.

Cases against both parties have been registered.

"We are observing 138 people across the state, including in Bengaluru," the department's Communicable Diseases Wing Joint Director Prakash Kumar told news agency.

Though no coronavirus-positive case has been reported from Karnataka so far, four persons have been admitted in a state hospital under medical observation, Kumar confirmed.

Of the 104 samples sent for testing from the state, 85 have, so far, been declared negative. As many as 130 persons in the state were kept under home-isolation observation.

Four Karnataka districts bordering Kerala — Kodagu, Mangluru, Chamarajanagar and Mysuru — continue to be under surveillance after three positive coronavirus cases were reported in Kerala.

On Saturday, it was reported that three persons from Udupi were isolated at the Ajjarkad Government Hospital. Two of them had travelled to China while the other had returned to Udupi from Japan.

From January 20 till Saturday, 14,153 passengers underwent thermal screening at the Kempegowda International Airport, including three who had a history of visiting China’s Wuhan, the epicenter of the nCoV outbreak.

The '104 Arogya Sahayavani' call centre, which people can call for guidance on coronavirus, has clocked 1,792 calls so far.

"In case people with recent travel history to China and other affected countries develop any symptoms, they are requested to call 104 or health authorities and provide all necessary details in order to take necessary measures and are requested to be quarantined at home," reiterated the department.

Three confirmed cases of coronavirus were earlier reported in Kerala and over 722 deaths were confirmed around the world, mostly in mainland China.

Bengaluru, Jun 9: A 42-year-old founding director of an engineering consultancy firm lost Rs 65,000 to online fraudsters who posed as representatives of a mobile service provider and lured him with the offer of a fancy number recently.

Asif (name changed) received a text message on May 19, informing him that a platinum number, 9099999999, was available and interested people could dial a mobile number to avail it.

“Asif, who runs a mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP) engineering consultancy near Shivajinagar, decided to get the fancy mobile number. He called the number and the receiver said they would generate an invoice for his request. After a fake invoice for Rs 64,900 was generated, Asif paid the money through online transaction that day. Asif waited for two weeks for the SIM card with the fancy number to reach him,” an officer said.

East CEN Crime police registered a case of cheating under section 420 of IPC and sections under the Information Technology Act after Asif lodged a complaint on June 6.
