Booze smuggled from Goa seized in city; Three held

Mangalore, October 4: In an early morning raid, Excise officials seized illegal liquor being smuggled into the city in a luxury bus on Thursday.

 

Three persons - identified as bus drivers Ashok son of Subba, Venkappa, and cleaner Vishwanatha Moolya alias Shivappa Moolya son of Santhosh - have also been arrested.

 

The Ganesh Travels bus bearing registration number K A-21 8575, which was carrying illicit liquor under the passenger seats.

 

As many as 31 bottles of 750 ml and 98 sachets of 90 ml (Total 27.570 litre) were recovered.

 

It is learnt that excise officials were on the lookout for liquor being smuggled into the city from Goa, where alcohol is cheaper.

 

"The liquor was brought from Goa and hidden under the passenger seats. It was likely to be sold in the market. Three employees of Ganesh Travels were arrested when we raided the bus," said an official of Excise Department.

 

In-charge Deputy Superintendent of Excise Department Chetan Kumar led the raid under the direction of the Deputy Commissioner of Excise Department B V Hoovappa Gowda.

Mangaluru, Apr 18: The residents of Thokkottu welcomed a COVID-19 patient who was cured and discharged from hospital with a standing ovation. 

The man remained in quarantine after returning from Tablighi Jammat religious gathering at Nizamuddin in Delhi. He was tested positive for COVID-19 on April 4 and was shifted to Wenlock Hospital for treatment.

After he was tested positive, a complete lockdown was announced within a 200-metre radius of the apartment where he was residing at Thokkottu.

The cured patient will have to remain quarantined at home for the next 14 days.

He has thanked the doctors, nurses and paramedical staff of Wenlock Hospital who took care of him in the hospital. 

In the meantime, 12 COVID-19 patients out of 13 have been cured and discharged from the hospital in Dakshina Kannada district.

Mangaluru, Aug 7: A youth died on the spot in a ghastly road mishap on Netravati Bridge near Thokkottu on the outskirts of the city today evening.

Police sources said that the face of the youth, who was riding a motorbike, has been damaged beyond recognition. He died on the spot. 

More details about the mishap are yet to be known. A case has been registered at Mangaluru Traffic police station.

Mysuru, Feb 6: Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu on Thursday said that he would consult experts in Ayurveda and other streams over coronavirus issue.

Speaking to the media here, he said that ''So far no positive case has been reported in the state''.

''However, the Health department officials have taken all precautionary measures to check the epidemic'', he further said.
