Kasargod, October 5: Three youths have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping two girls who were on their way to school near Kanhangad and Cheruvathur on Monday.
Mungath Mubasheer, 26, Anish, 22, and Amal, 22, have been arrested for kidnapping the girls by promising to take them to circus shows and then confining them to Mubasheer's rented house at Velloor, near Payyanur, a senior police official in Kanhangad said. A woman who lives near the house of one of the girls at Padannakkad saw the child being taken in an autorickshaw towards Cheruvathur and alerted the victim's father.
The man, who examined his daughter's mobile phone kept in the house, contacted those who had called her. The abductors then sent him threatening messages.
Having realised that they were in for trouble, the accused left the girls at Neeleswaram and sped from the spot.
The police arrested them from Mubasheer's house at Velloor, where he was staying with his wife.
The youths have been charged with sections 120 (concealing design to commit offence punishable with imprisonment) and 365 (kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person) of the Indian Penal Code.
The Judicial First Class Magistrate Court, Hosdurg, has remanded them in judicial custody for two weeks.
