Three of a family including pregnant woman killed in accident; mob blocks highway

Udupi, October 5: Three members of a family including a pregnant woman were killed and two others were injured when a speeding bus hit them near Vidyaniketan School at Kaup in Udupi district on Thursday.

 

The deceased have been identified as Rafeeq Ahmed (32), a resident of Hejmady, his sister Nafeesa (37) and wife Nusaiba. Nafeesa's son Fahad (2) and Rafeeq's son Ghalib have been hospitalized with severe injuries.

 

Superintendent of Police M B Boralingaiah said that a private bus which was overtaking a lorry hit four persons who were walking by the side of National Highway 66. As a result pregnant woman Nafeesa died on the spot and two others succumbed to their injuries at a hospital.

 

The driver of Durgamba Express bus was plying from Mangalore to Udupi fled the spot after the accident. Rash and negligent driver by the bus driver was the cause of the accident.

 

Following the incident there was tense situation in the area, as the angry mob blocked the high way for some time.

Bengaluru, Apr 29: Karnataka government on Tuesday ordered organisations and NGOs in the state to distribute food to people in plastic boxes and not in polythene bags.

"The state government has ordered the distribution of food and meals in plastic boxes instead of in polythene bags," said the Information and Public Relations Department of the state government.

According to the government, during Covid-19, not only government departments and agencies but also various organisations and NGOs are providing meals to workers in polythene covers.

"However, in order to protect the health of the workers, the government has ordered the supply of food or meals in plastic boxes instead of polythene covers," it added.

Mangaluru, July 30: Medical doctor turned IAS officer K V Rajendra assumed charge as the 130th deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district here today.

The 2013 batch Karnataka cadre officer succeeds Sindhu B Rupesh, who was transferred as Director of Electronic Delivery of Citizen Services (EDCS), Bengaluru. The outgoing DC welcomed the new DC in the presence of staff. 

Dr Rajendra said that he expects cooperation from all stakeholders in administering the district, amidst the mounting Covid-19 cases.

Rajendra, an alumnus of JJM Medical College, Davanagere, was serving as the CEO of Belagavi zilla panchayat before being posted as DC of this coastal district. 

Having served as assistant commissioner of Puttur sub-division for nearly a year from December 2015, Dr Rajendra, hails from Thirthahalli in Shivamogga district, had his probationary training in Bidar. He posted as CEO of Ballari ZP where he worked for nearly three till 21, 2019.

He also had a brief stint as assistant secretary in the department of fertiliser with the ministry of chemicals and fertilisers.

Sindhu who was the CEO of Udupi zilla panchayat had succeeded Sasikanth Senthil, who resigned from the Indian Administrative Service on September 6, 2019. She had taken charge on September 7, 2019.

Bengaluru, April 2: At least three people have been arrested by police in connection with the attack on ASHA worker Krishnaveni in Bengaluru's Byatarayanapura area.

Earlier in the day, Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao said that an investigation was initiated into the incident in which ASHA workers were attacked.

"I have appointed Pulikeshi Nagar ACP, Tabarak Fathima, to investigate the matter. A case will be registered and action will be taken. ASHA workers will be protected by the police to carry out their functions," Rao told ANI here.

Earlier, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister CN Ashwath Narayan visited one of the ASHA workers who was allegedly attacked by unidentified miscreants and termed the incident as "completely demoralising" for the workers.

ASHA workers, who were deployed to spread awareness about coronavirus and identify suspected cases, were allegedly attacked by a group of locals in Byatarayanapura here on Wednesday.

The workers said that the locals did not allow them to work and around 100 people gathered at the spot and harassed them.

This comes as the country is under a 21-day lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
