Kasargod, October 6: Police have averted a possible explosion by seizing a large haul of explosive substances during a raid in the Nadapuram, a communally and politically sensitive region of North Malabar in the neighboring state of Kerala. explosive

Officers of the raiding team said the explosive substances, including eight gelignite sticks, six detonators, fuse wires of 30 metres, and three kg of ammonium nitrate, were seized from a secluded plot near T.I.M. Training College.

The raids were carried out by a team of police personnel led by Vadakara Deputy Superintendent of Police Jossy Cherian from 7 a.m. on Friday.

This was following an instruction from Additional Director General of Police (North Zone) N. Shanker Reddy, who had earlier visited the region that is known for communal and political clashes.

The explosive substances were concealed in a plastic bag and kept inside a compound, the police said.

The raids were conducted in the wake of an intelligence input that explosives were being stockpiled at Nadapuram and adjoining areas. Some fundamentalist outfits could be attempting to foment trouble as the area had been free of any major disturbances in recent times, except for an instance of rioting by two groups of students affiliated to different political parties during a school election.

Quarrying is done a few kilometres from the area where the explosives were found. Investigators are puzzled about the explosives being abandoned at an uninhabited spot. Explosives substances mostly reach the hands of anti-social elements for making pipe and steel bombs, the police said.

The explosive substances were shifted to the Nadapuram police station. A case was registered in connection with the incident.

Raids would continue in the coming days as well, they said.

New Delhi, Jun 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday sought a discussion on advances in telemedicine, the use of "Make in India" products in the healthcare, and the use of IT tools in the medical sector for a healthier society.

Addressing an event at the Rajiv Gandhi Health University in Bengaluru via video conference, he sought a discussion on whether new models can be conceived that make telemedicine popular on a larger scale.

Referring to the "Make in India" program, he said the initial gains made in this field make him optimistic. "Our domestic manufacturers have started production of personal protective equipment and have supplied about one crore PPEs to those in the frontline of fighting COVID-19.

Modi said IT-related tools for healthier societies can be of great help.

"I am sure you have heard of Arogya Setu. Twelve crore health-conscious people have downloaded it. This has been very helpful in the fight against coronavirus," he said.
