Ernakulam based Anush, who was taken into custody by Suratkal Police from the same train in the wee hours of Friday, was let off with a warning after questioning, sources said.
“He was mentally ill and not a terrorist”, said sources in Suratkal Police Station.
The railway police had gone into a tizzy when they received a bomb threat and conducted special checks at Suratkal Railway Station from Thursday mid night to Friday morning.
Anush had called the Manipal railway police and threatened that there was a bomb planted in the train. He also said that there was another bomb lodged near the Karwar railway track.
The bomb threat call was received at police control room at around 12 am from Anush, when the train had just left Kankanady Railway Station.
"As soon as we got to know about bomb threat, we rushed bomb disposal squad to Suratkal Railway Station to conduct search operations," said a senior security official. The train arrived at Suratkal with a few minutes.
The bomb threat was declared a 'hoax call' after around four hours of extensive search operation, which left passengers suffering as police evacuated the platforms during the safety search.
The train continued its journey at around 4:30 am. Apart from Netravati Express travelling between Ernakulam and Kurla, some other trains also were reportedly stopped for extra time to ensure safety of passengers.
Along with bomb disposal squad, a team consisting city police, fire brigade and dog squad helped in sanitizing the railways station. Panambur ACP Ravi Kumar, Traffic ACP GV Subrahmanya, Suratkal SI M A Nataraj, Moodbidri SI Ramesh Kumar, RPF officers, Mangalore Railway ATM Vinay Kumar, Mechanical Engineer Rajan Babu, Suratakal Railway Station master Charles also took part in the search operation.
However, Police did not lodge any FIR in the case.
