Mentally ill mother, teenage daughter commit suicide

hangMangalore, October 7: A woman and her teenage daughter allegedly committed suicide by hanging in their house at Didupe village near Belthangady in Dakshina Kannada district.

The deceased have been identified as Sundari (40), wife of Anand Gowda and their daughter Sandhya (15).

Police said that the duo was found hanging from the ceiling by Ananda Gowda on Saturday.

It is learnt that Sundari was suffering from some mental illness. Her daughter Sandhya was a Class 9 student at Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College in Ujire.

The incident came to light when Anand Gowda, who had gone to the fields Friday night, returned home next morning.

Belthangady police have registered a case and are investigating the reason behind the suicide pact.

Bengaluru, Jul 15: Karnataka on Wednesday reported 3,176 new cases taking the total count of cases in the state to 47,253.

A total of 1,975 new cases were reported from the Bengaluru alone, the state's health department said.

The toll has gone up to 928 with 87 deaths reported today.

The total count of COVID-19 cases in the country is 9,36,181.

Bengaluru, May 12: The South Western Railway on Tuesday informed that a 'Shramik special train' has left Karnataka for Bihar carrying 1,428 migrants onboard.

The special train carrying migrants to Motihari, Bihar departed from Kabaka Puttur in Karnataka.

Passengers were observing social distancing norms during boarding.

Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had recently granted permission for movement of stranded citizens including migrants labourers, workers, students, tourists to return to their native towns.

As per the list provided by the Karnataka government, South Western Railway is arranging special trains. These special trains are being run from point to point with no stoppages en-route.

Mangaluru, June 28: Three fresh deaths in last 24 hours have taken the total number of covid-19 deaths in Dakshina Kannada district to 13.

While a 31-year-old youth from Idya in Surathkal and a 57-year-old woman from Bantwal passed away last night, a 52-year-old woman from Jokatte breathed her last today. 

The youth from Suratkal breathed his last in Wenlok. The woman from Bantwal’s Loretto Padav village was unwell for last 1 year. She was tested positive three days ago and passed away at a private hospital. 

The woman from Jokatte was reportedly suffering from tuberculosis. On June 26, she was admitted to a private hospital in the city, where she was tested coronavirus positive.

As per the district health bulletin on Saturday June 27 evening, a total of 12,919 samples have been sent for tests till date, out of which 12,198 have turned out negative, and 576 positive, including 10 persons from other districts. 

Out of these, 148 are currently active. As many as 416 persons have recovered and been discharged.
