Mangalore, October 8: Infighting within the Janata Dal (Secular) has also come out in the open as a few JD(S) activists shouted slogans against M B Sadashiva, the district president of the party and Secretary Vittla Mohammed Kunhi at a meet on Monday.

Speaking at the meet organised by the DK district JD(S) Workers' Unit, Mohammed Rafi, the President of the unit said that the party is being run by mere three people. M B Sadashiva is displaying dictatorship, he alleged, stating that he had not made an attempt to bring B Nagaraj Shetty, who recently joined the party, to the party office and hold a ceremony for the same. The job was carried out by the Workers' Unit and Mr. Sadashiva tried to disrupt it, he added besides saying that the district president is trying to divide the party. Activists are not being given their right to question decisions being taken, he said.

Joining in revolt, Sudarshan, the Gurupura Block JD(S) President, said that he had been issued a show cause notice four months ago for speaking against party leaders.

Activists shouted slogans against Mr.Sadashiva and Mr. Kunhi and demanded their resignations, resulting in chaos for some time at the venue.

JD(S) leaders MG Hegde, Abdul Azeez Malar, Sushil Noranha, Vittla Mohammed Kunhi, DM Aslam, Soundarya Ramesh, Sureshchandra Shetty, Vittala Bhandary Harekala, Abdul Majeed Sooralpady, were present among others watching the chaos unfold.

'Not a good development'

Speaking about the incident later, Mr. Sadashiva said that he had not caused any obstruction in holding a ceremony for Mr. Shetty. “I had suggested that Amarnath Shetty be also invited for that and when Mr. Rafi called me, I was in Bangalore owing to my son's ill-health and hence told him that I could not attend the programme. But I have been told that in my absence he has conducted a meet and spoken against me. This is not a good development and neither is it a mark of a leader”, Mr. Sadashiva said.

Mangaluru, Feb 17: Kambala superstar Shrinivas Gowda, who is drawing comparisons to ace sprinter Usain Bolt, has reportedly refused to take part in athletics trials with the Sports Authority of India.

28-year-old Gowda, who hails from Moodbidri in Dakshina Kannada, was celebrated as a potential Olympian after a clip of his race went viral, amid claims that he had done 100m in 9.55 seconds, against Bolt's record of 9.58. He has so far won 32 medals in 11 kambala events this season.

Union sports minister Kiren Rijiju and SAI said Gowda would appear for trials at SAI's Bengaluru centre on Monday. The government "will do everything to identify sporting talents", Rijiju had tweeted.

"I will meet the Chief Minister. I am keen on continuing in kambala," Gowda said. Asked about the clamour for a crossover into athletics, he said, "For the time being I have no plans to appear for SAI trials. I am busy with the Kambala season and will consider meeting them following that and after consulting my well-wishers."

Bengaluru, Feb 19: Karnataka Forest Minister Anand Singh on Wednesday said that there was no criminal case filed directly against him.

When asked about PIL filed in the Karnataka High Court against him, Singh told media: "Some lawyer has filed a PIL against me in the High Court. I cannot stop anyone from filing the PIL."

"I have given my criminal record. There is no criminal case directly filed against me. My name is there in some cases but in 'others category'. We will see what happens," he said.

When asked about Congress leader Siddaramaiah's comments criticising him for being given the forest portfolio, Singh said: "I cannot comment on what he said against me as he is a former chief minister and very senior leader."

"Also the opposition always tries to make allegations against me. That is why he criticised me," he said.

Leader of Opposition in Karnataka Assembly Siddaramaiah on Monday demanded that Forest Minister Anand Singh should either be expelled from the ministry or assigned a different portfolio.

A number of cases are pending against Singh including those registered under the Karnataka Forest Act.

Bengaluru, May 17: Left to itself, Karnataka will look to spring back towards normalcy under Lockdown 4.0 as the state government is on standby to resume public transport services from May 18, if the Centre allows it.

Though KSRTC and BMTC have been preparing for resumption of services, officials in the two corporations told DH that they cannot make a move till the government makes a decision.

Transport Commissioner N Shivakumar said the department will take a decision based on the state government's orders. "The government will take a call on buses as well as taxi and other transport services," he said.

Senior officials in the state government said Deputy Chief Minister and Transport Minister Laxman Savadi has written to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari seeking a nod for resumption of the services.

Transport Secretary Gaurav Gupta has written a separate letter to his counterpart in the Union government requesting permission to operate public transport. "The state government wants the services to open. The official has listed out the steps the corporations will take to ensure social distancing other steps that will be taken to check spread of Coronavirus," a source said.

The B S Yediyurappa administration has been bullish on easing lockdown restrictions.

If the Centre empowers the states to define Lockdown 4.0, Karnataka is likely to do away with the red-orange-green zoning of districts and allow public services to resume, except in COVID-19 containment zones. The government is also likely to redefine its containment strategy by micromanaging localities where COVID-19 cases are reported, without letting life in an entire district get affected.

The government has already shown willingness to allow hotels and gyms to open after May 17 subject to social distancing norms and restrictions. In fact, the government has proposed to allow the resumption of all economic activities in standalone establishments. The government, however, is not keen on opening malls, theatres, diners and establishments that have centralized air conditioning.

“Everything depends on the Centre,” Deputy Chief Minister CN Ashwath Narayan said. “Our only stand is that the red zone should be treated at par with the other zone when it comes to relaxation.”
