claKasargod, October 9: At least nine persons were injured in clashes erupted between Communist Party of India (CPI-M) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers at Kumbla on Sunday.

Two CPI(M) workers were taken into custody on Monday in connection with the incident.

The police said there was an incident involving BJP and CPI(M) workers returning from the annual 'Gramotsav' at nearby Bambrana Bayal.

The injured had been admitted to hospitals in Mangalore and at the Pariyaram medical college hospital.

The CPI(M) workers said they were attacked after they questioned, what they termed, attempts by BJP workers to communalise the mass sporting event.

However, the BJP workers alleged that the trouble started after a BJP worker was attacked by a group of CPI(M) workers on Sunday morning.

The CPI(M) workers re-grouped again in the evening and attacked the BJP workers.

The police registered cases against two CPI (M) workers under Section 307 and 308 of the IPC. A police team, led by Kumbla Circle Inspector T.P. Ranjith, carried out raids on a few houses last night in connection with the incident.

The police enhanced security in the town to prevent untoward incidents.

An all-party meeting was chaired by Mr. Ranjith to restore normality in the area.
