Mental depression may destroy families'

Mangalore, October 11: Senior psychiatrist and head of Department of Psychiatry at Kasturba Medical College, said that mental depression could destroy families.

 

He was speaking at a function held at Paediatric Block Conference Hall of Wenlock District Hospital, in the city on Wednesday to mark World Mental Health Day. The programme was jointly organised by Department of Psychiatry, Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Wenlock District Hospital and Manaswini, Mangalore.

 

Mr Tunga said the everyday stresses of the modern life have seen a drastic rise in the number of people with mental problems.

 

Currently, around 10 per cent of the population has some form of mental disorders while 4 per cent has severe disorders, he said.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Dean of Department of Social Work at Roshni Nilaya Dr Rameela Shekar advised the people to build interpersonal relationships to avoid depression.

 

She said that the psychiatry community played an important role in promoting the mental health of individuals and preventing them from going into depression. One has to build awareness and mental health potential that will help in prevention of depression in people. Along with treatment for mental illness, one also required love and care. Even normal people require love, security and care to prevent depression, she said.

 

She raised concerns whether children felt loved and safe at homes or in schools, in spite of their incapabilities. “We want our children to bloom, but do we really allow them to,” she asked.

 

She also advised the community to remain happy and enjoy the daily occurrences in life, however small, since we tended to overlook them. She also suggested adding play along with work and creating time for oneself, as it helped stabilise one's mental health.

 

Principal District and Sessions Judge of Dakshina Kannada Ashok Nijagannavar said that circumstances such as extinction of joint families and rise in single parenting resulted in increase of mental depression in people. It is the duty of the society to cater to the needs of people suffering from mental disorders. Unless there is support from the society, the laws and projects for mentally ill implemented by the government will not be fruitful, he stressed.

 

He said that individuals suffering from stress sometimes did not opt for counselling for fear of being 'branded' as a mental patient. “Those with mental illnesses ought not to be looked as social stigma. We need to create awareness and educate the masses, so that those with mental illnesses are not looked as social stigma. The best cure we can give for these patients is love and care,” he said.

 

Deputy Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation Amithakala said that people are hesitant to consult or seek counsel for stress and other related disorders which affected our mental health, but this ought to change.

 

District Surgeon and Medical Superintendent of Wenlock Hospital Dr P Saroja presided over the function.

 

Associate Dean of KMC Dr Vivian D'Souza and Senior Psychiatrist Dr Arun Rao were present at the programme.

Mangaluru, Jul 6: Two fresh deaths in last 24 hours have taken the total number of covid-19 deaths in Dakshina Kannada district to 24.

The deceased are a 52-year-old woman from Ullal and a 52-year-old man from Thokkottu.

The man was suffering from cardovascular disease and pneumonia, sources said.

The woman passed away in Wenlock hospital.

More details are awaited.

Bengaluru, Apr 18: Amid fears that people from the unorganised sector are running out of cash to meet their daily expenses, the Karnataka government said there was no data available for such labourers, who can be provided financial assistance under the direct benefit transfer (DBT) scheme.

"The government does not have data of people in the unorganised sector such as drivers, farmers, domestic help and others. If we have to deposit directly into their account, we need data..," State Labour minister A Shivaram Hebbar told reporters.

The minister said a situation borne out of the COVID-19, where the entire nation has been lockdown was never anticipated.

To him, the pandemic has given an opportunity to gather information about the unorganised sector.

"This COVID-19 has taught the department and the workers a lesson that we should be prepared for a situation like this. We have learnt that all the information about labourers should be available with the labour department," Hebbar conceded.

The minister opined that the department should have had the list during the good times but nobody bothered to have it.

"During the good times nobody bothered about it -- neither they (beneficiaries) asked for it, nor we thought of it.," Hebbar said.

Now that the pandemic has struck, the government is focusing only on not letting anyone starve to death.

A three-level preparation has been made -- at the village level, Taluk level and the city level, the minister said.

Village anganwadis have been stuffed with food items to be cooked for the needy, whereas in Taluk level, government hostels have been turned into shelters for the labourers, he said, noting that lakhs of philanthropists in cities have come forward to feed the people from unorganised sector.

"The basic objective of our government is that no one should starve to death. The issue of organised or unorganised sector comes next," he explained.

On the fear of large-scale retrenchment, the minister said notices have been served on all the industries that no one should be expelled from the job.

However, Hebbar underlined that the industrialists today are as much in distress as the workers and his department was taking into account everyone's concern.

A decision will be taken in this connection by the government in the next two days, to provide assistance to small enterprises to keep them afloat.

Mangaluru, Apr 12: Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary on Saturday, April 11, welcomed the State government’s decision to permit fishing during the lockdown that’s now extended till April 30.

“We welcome the Centre’s decision to permit fishing during the lockdown. This directive comes as a huge relief for the fishing community,” Poojary told newsmen here.

Poojary informed that 14,000 boats will be deployed for fishing. Keeping the need for social distancing in mind only five crew members will be allowed on a boat. The boats can set sail in the morning and should return by evening.
