Ullal youth gives a new lease of life to mentally challenged man

Mangalore, October 11: A mentally challenged man, who had been seen scavenging in bins at Thokkotu, four months ago, has now been leading a normal life thanks to the selfless efforts of a local philanthropic youth.

 

Hailing from Maharashtra, 30-year-old Aalam, who had so far been living on the streets without any means of survival, was given a fresh lease of life. Having been completely cured, Alam has returned to his hometown along with members of his family.

Four months ago, Aalam was seen at Thokkottu junction on the outskirts of the city scavenging for left-overs in a trash bin. While people hesitated to approach this man due to his shabby appearance and foul odour, Razik, a young man from Ullal, took him along, bathed and fed him and provided him with fresh clothes.

 

Later, Razik got him admitted for treatment at K S Hegde Hospital at Deralakatte. Aalam was taken care of by students of the medical college, whose efforts bore good results for Alam.

 

Once cured, the students found out his home address and contacted his family, who arrived on Monday and took Aalam back to Maharashtra with them.

 

Born in a poor family, Aalam had been mentally ill and had been missing from the past 18 months. A missing case too had been registered at the jurisdictional police station in his hometown.

Bengaluru, May 7: A 55-year old woman from Davanagere became the 30th COVID-19 related fatality in Karnataka, where a total number of infections has crossed 700-mark, with eight new positive cases being confirmed, the health department said on Thursday.

The deceased woman was a known case of diabetes and hypertension, she was admitted with a complaint of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and was on a ventilator, the department said in its mid-day situation update.

She died today at a designated hospital in Davanagere, it said.

"Eight new positive cases have been reported from last evening to this noon...

Till date 701 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed. This includes 30 deaths and 363 discharges," the update said.

The eight new cases reported include three from Davangere, indulging the deceased patient; also three from Kalaburagi, and one each from Hirebagewadi in Belagavi district and Bengaluru urban.

While four cases are contacts of patients earlier tested positive, three are with the history of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and one is a SARI case.

Five among eight new cases are women and three are men.

Bengaluru, Apr 10: The Karnataka Education Board on Friday further postponed the annual examination for SSLC to May due to extension of lockdown to arrest spread of coronavirus which is spreading like wildfire in the state.

Minister for Primary and Higher Education S Suresh Kumar also announced that the PUC examination were also postponed to May.

"However, depending upon the situation we will announce the date in May and will inform the students one week earlier of the examination date to give time for preparation,"

Udupi, Jul 20: Five COVID Day Care Centres have been opened here on Monday with combined 870 bed for asymptomatic Covid-19 patients.

The Centres are set up at Karkala (1), Udupi (3) and Kundapura (1). Presently more than 100 patients are being treated in these Centres.

These Centres have been opened in the wake of high incidences of Covid-19 cases in the district. They are set up for asymptomatic patients who do not wish to be treated at home.
