Bhatkal bandh against 'media crusade' total, peaceful

Bhatkal, October 11: The Bhatkal bandh call given by the Majlis-e-Islah-o-Tanzeem on Thursday against the alleged 'media crusade against Muslim community' evoked a good response in the coastal town.

The dawn-to-dusk bandh was total and peaceful as all shops and business establishments were closed. The town wore a deserted look throughout the day and hardly any traffic or pedestrians were seen on roads.

Though a couple of auto-rickshaws and tempos were seen in some corners, there was no one to hire them. A few of women fish vendors were trying to sell fish in market, but to their disappointment, there were no buyers.

All the schools and colleges also remained closed. The young activists deployed by Tanzeem to supervise the bandh were seen busy on streets in all parts of the town throughout the day.

Leaders of Tanzeem had requested the people to maintain peace and not to indulge in any violent act even if somebody tried to provoke them.

Security was beefed up in the entire town and surrounding areas. A senior police officer of Uttara Kannada district said that the bandh was peaceful and no untoward incident was reported from any part of the coastal town.

“The situation throughout the day was absolutely peaceful. We had tightened the security at all strategic points including bus stand”, he said.

Various political and social organisations had extended support to the bandh including Congress, JD(S), CPI (M), Contactors Association, Rotary Club, Bhatkal Citizen Forum and Auto-rickshaw Drivers Association.

The Bandh was aimed at exerting pressure on the authorities to take action against the communal and anti-social journalists, who had portrayed Muslims of Bhatkal as terrorists through a malicious report published in 'Kannada Prabha' daily newspaper on September 2.  The report also targeted eight Masjids of the town.

Bengaluru, Jan 17: Karnataka Health Minister and BJP leader B Sriramulu on Friday claimed that Congress supports Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and Popular Front of India (PFI) to disturb peace in the state.

His statement came after the arrest of 6 SDPI supporters in connection with an attack on a BJP-RSS follower during a pro-CAA rally held in December last year.

"The Congress party 100 per cent supports SDPI and PFI. Whenever they do not get the power, they try to disturb the peace with the support of SDPI and PFI. I will propose in Karnataka Assembly session to ban these organisations in Karnataka. We will discuss this matter," Sriramulu told ANI.

"We had already demanded for the ban on these organisations in Karnataka when I was an MP. Shobha Karandlaje, Yediyurappa and I had met Rajnath Singh, the then Home Minister in Delhi and we had given a memorandum to ban SDPI and PFI," he added.

A case has been registered against arrested SDPI supporters under relevant Sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Bengaluru Police is constituting a new Special Investigation Team (SIT) to handle this case.

"There were 6 people belonging to SDPI, who were here to carry out attacks on leaders supporting CAA. These people were being paid Rs 10,000 from their handlers to create ruckus here. Now this will be handled by the Anti-Terror unit," said Bhaskar Rao, Bengaluru Commissioner of Police.

Earlier today, Karnataka Minister Jagadish Shettar called for a ban on SDPI.

"SDPI always denies their involvement but it has been proved now. I welcome the police's action. Their organisation should be banned as they have always been involved in anti-social activities and government of India should take very serious note of this," Shettar told ANI here.

Kannur, Jan 23: A member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has been arrested for attempting to create unrest in Kerala by hurling crude bombs at RSS office and police picket. The miscreants had reportedly planned to pass the blame on others.

The bomb attack took place of January 16 in Kerala’s Kannur. The accused Prabesh, an RSS hardliner, was arrested from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

According to the Kerala police Prabesh hurled steel bombs towards the police picket in front of Kathirur Manoj Smrithi Kendram, an RSS office.

"He threw bombs during the wee hours of January 16 morning. Following the arrest he has confessed that his aim was RSS office. Kannur, being politically sensitive region, any attack on political party offices will be regarded as an act by the opponent," Kathirur SI Nijeesh said.

"We had a police picket in the region for a few months now. We are assuming he wanted to create unrest in the area by removing the police from the spot. We could contain the situation because of the CCTV visuals. He was identified immediately after the incident. Following the attack he went to Coimbatore and was hiding there. Our team nabbed him from Coimbatore," he said.

The police have also said that the accused Prabesh had many criminal cases pending against him including those under Explosive Substances Act, 1883. He was nabbed by a team lead by Kathirur SI Nijeesh, CPO Rohith and Vijeesh.

The RSS office in the region is named after Kathirur Manoj a senior karyakarta (worker) who was allegedly killed by the CPI(M) activists in 2014. Kathirur Manoj was the prime accused in the attempt to murder of senior CPI(M) leader P Jayarajan in 1999.
