Mangalore, October 12: The controversy over burqa ban on the campus of Kukke Shri Subrahmanyeshwara First Grade College has been reignited with the College management snubbing the district administration's directive by reinstating the rules which prohibits Muslim girls from entering the College premises with full body-covering dress.
The college is run by the management of the Kukke Subrahmanya Temple, which comes under the state's endowment department. The college authorities had, through a sudden order on September 22, banned burqa for Muslim girls on campus.
Even though Deputy Commissioner N S Channappa Gowda earlier this month had asked the College principal Dinesh Kamath to immediately revoke the controversial rules following media reports, he had not issued any formal written order.
Meanwhile, the temple management has sent a letter to the principal instructing him to reinstate the ban owing to the absence of a written communication from the DC.
As per the instructions of the temple management, the principal had put up a notice on Thursday ordering the Muslim girls not to enter the college wearing burqa. The notice was once again removed following the re-intervention of the DC, who once again requested the principal to maintain the status-quo.
Mr Kamath said that he had to bow down to the management's order as there was no written order from the DC.
However, it is learnt that Muslim girl students - all 15 of them out of a total student strength of 685- are still being forced to remove their burqas outside the entrance gate despite DC's order.
