Mangalore, October 12: The District administration has decided to ban the use of plastics in Dakshina Kannada district in a phased manner. The ban on the use of plastics has been implemented in Moodbidri TMC limits on a pilot basis.
The plastic ban will be implemented in Mangalore city and taluk from November 1, said Deputy Commissioner Dr N S Channappa Gowda.
Chairing a meeting of various organisations here on Thursday, he said “the citizens of the district should cooperate with the district administration in implementing the ban. The ban on the use of plastic will be implemented only after getting suggestions from the plastic users, manufacturers, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry.”
He said the use of below 40 micron thickness carry bags have already been banned in Dakshina Kannada. The Mangalore City Corporation officials have been carrying out raids at various places in the MCC limits, to check the use of banned plastic carry bags. The College students and members of various organisations have been creating awareness on the ill effects of the use of plastics. Even District-in-Charge Minister has directed all the officials to initiate measures to ban the use of plastics.
“The district administration has decided to study the pros and cons of the ban on plastic before implementing the order. In the first phase, district administration has decided to ban plastics in Mangalore taluk from November 1,” he said.
There are 60 units manufacturing plastics in the district. The meeting discussed on alternatives to plastics.
“Subsidy will be provided for the sthree shakthi sangha, self-help groups to manufacture cloth bags. We will ensure that there would be no burden on the consumers,” Channappa Gowda said.
The participants in the meeting urged the district administrative to dispose the plastic waste in a scientific manner.
Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr K N Vijayaprakash, MCC Commissioner Dr Harish Kumar, Pollution Control Officer Lakshman and others were present.
