Rape & murder: Protests spread across district amidst tardy investigation

Mangalore, October 12: Amidst the confusing statements by the police following the arrest of a suspect in connection with the rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl in Dharmasthala, hundreds of angry protesters, most of them students, flooded to the streets in different parts of Dakshina Kannada district on Friday demanding stringent action against the culprits.

 

Youth belonging to ABVP and Hindu Jagarana Vedike took to the streets across Belthangady taulk for the second consecutive day on Friday and threatened to continue their agitation if police failed to solve the case immediately.

 

The students of Ujire based SDM College, where the victim was studying, staged a silent protest.  Leftist organisations like CPI (M), DYFI, CFI and Janavadi Mahila Sanghatane also staged protest.

 

Members of outfits like Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Mahila Mandali, Jayakarnataka Students' Cell submitted memorandum to the superintendent of police of Dakshina Kannada urging to speed up the investigation.

 

The protests also spread to Mangalore as a large number of students under the banner of ABVP blocked road by forming a human chain at KPT Circle to express their anger over the incident and to grab the attention of the police.

 

Addressing the students, ABVP District Secretary Ramesh said that the brutal rape and murder of an innocent girl has instilled permanent fear in the minds of girls who come from remote villages to study. “Thousands of girls travel from rural areas to towns and cities every day to pursue their education. The incident has shattered their self-confidence”, he said.

Udupi, May 2: During the lockdown period the Department of Public Library digitised more books to the Karnataka Digital Public Library (KDPL).

According to the data released by the KDPL issued here on Saturday , as on April 29, 89,239 people from the State have already registered for the digital library.  From these 1,807 are from Dakshina Kannada district and 605 from the Udupi district.

The digital library already has a repository of 35,500 e-books, 4,800 videos, 59,980 e-journals and 1,112 items for children.

Bengaluru, June 29: The Karnataka government on Monday issued guidelines to conduct online classes for all students of ICSE, CBSE and SSLC under the directions of the High Court.

According to the guidelines, for the kindergarten students, online classes can be held 30 minutes a week and students in classes 1-5 will have online classes for 30-45 minutes divided into two periods for three alternate days every week.

For students in classes 6-8, the online classes will be for 30-45 minutes divided into two periods for five days every week while students in classes 9 and 10 can have the virtual classes for 30-45 minutes divided into four periods for five days a week.

Earlier, the state government barred online classes for the kids from LKG to class 5.

Minister for primary and secondary education S Suresh Kumar had said that online classes cannot be held for the kids from LKG to class V.

Bengaluru, Apr 6: The Covid-19 Task Force aims to conduct 80,000 throat swab and blood tests over the next three weeks here.

According to Task Force Nodal Officer C N Manjunath an order for one lakh anti-body test kits has been placed, and was expected to arrive on April 12.

"From January 20 to March 23, more than 1.2 lakh people arrived at international airports from abroad. Of these, we have kept 37,358 under observation. The Health officials and personnel in fever clinics and hospitals are being trained to conduct the tests. There is no necessity to obtain a clearance to test people with suspected infection. Only laboratories need to get permission to test their blood and throat swab samples."
