Tremors felt in Dakshina Kannada, other districts of Karnataka

Mangalore, October 14: Mild earthquake tremors were felt in some parts of Dakshina Kannada district besides other parts of the state on Sunday.

At about 2:20 pm on Sunday, tremors were felt for 3-4 seconds in different parts of the state causing panic among people.

Tremors measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale were felt in Sullia, Puttur, Belthangady, Kukke Subrahmanya and some other parts of Dakshina Kannada district.

Residents of villages around Sullia claimed that they experienced mild tremor. They came out of buildings in a panic after they experienced the mild shaking of building for few seconds, sources said.

People in some parts of Kodagu, Chikmagalur, and Hasan districts also experienced the tremors.

The tremor's epicentre lay at a depth of 5 kms, the IMD said in its preliminary report here. There were no immediate reports of any injuries or damage.

It may be recalled here that similar tow-intensity tremors were felt in several parts of Karnataka including in Mangalore and Udupi too on April 11, this year.

Shwetha Rasquinha conferred doctorate by Mangalore University

Mangaluru, Jan 2: Shwetha Rasquinha, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Social Work, St Aloysius College, Mangaluru, has been awarded Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree by the Mangalore University for her thesis titled “Effectiveness of Social work intervention on caretakers of cancer patients- A social work study in Mangalore”.

She did her studies under the guidance of Dr Rameela Shekhar, Professor (Rtd), School of Social work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru.

Ms Shwetha Rasquinha hails from Vittal, D/o Vincent Rasquinha and Late Regina Rasquinha, and is the second person to complete doctoral studies from the Vittal Parish.

Her colleagues and well-wishers have congratulated her for her highest achievement in academics and successful completion of quality research.

Mangaluru: 22 school students stranded in UP finally return home

Mangaluru, May 8: Twenty-two students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Mudipu on the outskirts of Mangalur city, stranded in Uttara Pradesh due to lock-down reached the campus on Friday morning.

These Class 9 students (12 girls and 10 boys) had studied at JNV Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, as part of an exchange programme, 21 students of Amroha campus studied in Mudipu.

While Amroha students could return after completing their studies, the Mudipu students were among many JNV students who were unable to return because of the lock-down.

JNV Mudipu Principal V Srinivasan said the 22 students, along with escorts, reached the campus at 7.15 a.m today.

Social distancing norm goes for a toss at ASHA workers' meet organized by BJP MLA

Davanagere, Apr 26: Amid the national lockdown imposed by the Centre to check the spread of coronavirus, social distancing norms were flouted as BJP MLA from Honnali -- MP Renukacharya -- held a meeting of ASHA workers on Thursday.

The workers were present in large numbers and no distance of at least one metre between the workers was maintained during the meeting.

However, the workers were seen wearing masks at the meeting but violating the norms of social distancing.

Social distancing is one of the measures that can help people avoid contracting the highly contagious coronavirus.

According to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Karnataka has a total of 489 positive COVID-19 cases of which, 153 patients have recovered and 18 patients have died due to the deadly virus.
