Mangalore, October 15: Certain technical problems are causing a delay in starting Mangalore-Shravanabelagola train services and hence a request has been placed before Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar to make necessary clearances, K H Muniyappa, Union Minister of State for Railways, said.

Speaking to mediapersons in Mangalore on Monday, Mr. Muniyappa said that although land acquisition problems at Nelamangala and Kunigal have been sorted out with regard to starting of the Mangalore-Bangalore-Shravanabelagola train service, there are still some technical problems causing delay in its initiation. It has been brought to the notice of the Chief Minister and he may give the necessary clearances soon, he said.

Responding to a query on laying of train tracks between Hubli and Ankola, Mr. Muniyappa said that the Environment and Widllife departments have certain objections to the project but there are chances of it getting a green signal as Indian Institute of Science has in a report submitted to them three months ago stated that deforestation for the purpose can be reduced and more tunnels can be implemented.

The Minister said that plans of developing Mangalore station as a world class station are in the pipeline but lack of land is acting as a major hindrance in this regard. “The concept is that passengers must have all facilities available to them at the station. It will encompass commercial complex, rest rooms and other such facilities. But land requirements are issues as minimum of five acres are needed for the purpose”, he said.

Speaking about Sonia Gandhi's scheduled visit to Mangalore on October 18, Mr. Muniyappa said that the UPA government has as per the vision of Ms. Gandhi introduced several projects for the benefit of the people under 'Bharat Nirmaan' project but the state government has been taking all the credit. The centre is ever willing to cooperate with the state and is ready to accept proposals by the state government to solve the drinking water problem, he said.

Earlier, Mr. Muniyappa, along with KPCC President Dr. G Parameshwar and other Congress leaders visited Nehru Maidan where preparations for the Sonia Gandhi programme are taking place in full swing.

Speaking to mediapersons on the occasion, Mr. Parameshwar said that the convention will help give momentum to the Congress party going into elections in the region.

On the Kaveri issue, Mr. Parameshwar said that the KPCC will form a team itself to carry out a study on the issue and the water needs of the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and submit the same to the government.

Bengaluru, Jan 23: Expressing shock over the blast which left him and his supporters injured yesterday, Shantinagar MLA NA Haris today said that the incident cannot be brushed aside as a firecracker blast and appealed to the state government to inquire into the incident.

Recovering from the injuries sustained on his leg, Haris was discharged from St Philomena's Hospital on Thursday afternoon.

Interacting with mediapersons outside his residence in Shantinagar, Haris said, “It wasn’t a cracker but a ball-like object that was hurled at me. Since my childhood, I have been seeing crackers and the object that was thrown at me was certainly not a cracker. It had splinters and hard objects.”

He said, “I have been representing the constituency for over 12-years and had no rivalry with anyone. Barring political ideology during elections, all the leaders in our constituency have been cooperative with each other. Yet, we do not know what the intention was or who was behind the incident.”

Revealing that home minister Basavaraj Bommai had called him to enquire about his condition at the hospital Haris said, “I have also briefed the home minister and explained to him what exactly happened. I have full faith in the police and will cooperate with the police during the investigation.” Haris said that doctors have advised him three to four-days of rest.

New Delhi, Mar 4: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed a trial court in Ramanagara district of Karnataka to ensure the presence of absconding self-styled godman Swami Nithyananda to face trial in a 2010 rape case.

A bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde also allowed a plea by K Lenin alias Nithya Dharmananda, former driver of Nithyananda and had filed a complaint against Nithyananda, for cancellation of non-bailable warrants issued against him.

The apex court ordered the cancellation of the non-bailable warrants issued against the complainant in the case on the condition he shows up before the trial court in Ramanagara district today itself.

He had challenged the Karnataka High Court's February order where non-bailable warrants were issued against Lenin for not appearing before the court for recording evidence.

"Having heard the counsel appearing for the petitioner and upon perusal of the record, we see no reason to interfere with the judgment and order passed by the High Court, which merely directs the petitioner to give evidence in support of his complaint," read the apex court order passed on Tuesday.

The Bench also directed that "the concerned trial court shall make every effort to ensure the presence of accused (Nithyananda) to face the proceedings."

The Karnataka High Court had last month cancelled the bail granted to Nithyananda, even as the state police claimed the absconding godman was on a 'spiritual tour'.

Nithyananda is facing charges of rape and indulging in unnatural sex. He was arrested on April 22, 2010, however, granted bail on June 11, the same year.
