Mangalore, October 15: B Nagaraj Shetty, former minister, has been made the State Vice President of the Janata Dal (Secular).

The official announcement was made by M B Sadashiva, District President, JD(S) at a press meet organized by the party in Mangalore on Monday.

Amarnath Shetty, Former Minister and senior party leader, handed over the charge of the post to Mr. Shetty on the occasion and said that the party has been strengthened with the inclusion of Mr. Shetty. A combined effort will be made by all leaders in strengthening the party at grass root level, he said.

The post has been specially created for Nagaraj Shetty by H D Kumaraswamy, State President, Mr. Sadashiva said. The JD(S) now has two senior State Vice Presidents in Nagaraj Shetty and Amarnath Shetty besides Sushil Noranha representing the minorities, he added.

When asked as to why he had accepted the post when he had made it clear while joining the party that he does not seek any position, Mr. Shetty said that he had not asked for the post. “I did not ask for this post. This was given to me and I accepted it”, he said. Mr. Sadashiva too joined Mr. Shetty in his defense and said that Mr. Shetty was not aspiring for any post and that it is a 'surpise gift' the party has given him.

When asked if he would accept the party's proposal for an election ticket, Mr. Shetty reiterated his claim that he will not contest elections. “My life is now reserved for JD(S) and I will work as a party activist for the welfare of the poor, needy, the minorities and the backward classes. I maintain that I am not in the party with an eye on any post. I am even willing to work as the PA of 'Kumaranna' (Kumaraswamy)”, Mr. Shetty said.

Mangaluru, Apr 3: The laboratory at District Wenlock Hospital has initiated trial for Covid 19 testing, close on the heels of receiving permission from state government.

Doctors, elected representatives and stakeholders had repeatedly demanded that a laboratory should be set up in the port city. Without the lab, the samples were sent either to Shivamogga or to Bengaluru for testing. When Heath Minister Sriramulu had visited Mangaluru on March 17, he had promised a lab in the city for testing of the samples.

Accordingly, the government gave permission for starting the laboratory at Wenlock Hospital. The process of registering the lab with Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) will be completed shortly. The laboratory will be fully operational only after it is registered.
